Buzz over Higgs boson hits new heights

ATLAS Collaboration / CERN

This diagram shows the results of a proton-on-proton collision in the Large Hadron Collider's ATLAS detector last September, with four muons indicated by red tracks. Such a result could be consistent with the Standard Model with or without the Higgs boson, depending on the analysis of multiple events.

By Alan Boyle

Has the Higgs boson finally been detected? It's almost gotten to the point that if a discovery of some sort doesn't come out of next week's update on the multibillion-dollar subatomic search, it'll be a big surprise. But how far will the announcement go, and what will it mean for the future of physics?

To refresh your memory, the Higgs boson is the only fundamental subatomic particle predicted by theory but not yet detected. It's thought to play a role in endowing some particles, such as the W and Z boson, with mass ... while leaving other particles, such as the photon, massless. The Higgs mechanism, proposed by British physicist Peter Higgs and others in the 1960s, could have played a role in electroweak symmetry breaking, which was a key event in the rise of the universe as we know it.

The Higgs boson is so key to the current understanding of fundamental physics that Nobel-winning scientist Leon Lederman nicknamed it the "God Particle"?? a term that has been making other physicists wince ever since. Another religion-tinged cliche would be to call it the "holy grail of particle physics," as CERN physicist John Ellis has. He says finding the Higgs is a key goal for the $10 billion Large Hadron Collider.

"That's one thing that we're really looking forward to with the LHC," Ellis told me five years ago. "In fact, back when we persuaded the politicians to stump up the money to build the thing, that's probably what we told them."

Last December, the teams reported that they saw "tantalizing hints" of the Higgs' existence at a mass of around 125 billion electron volts, or 125 GeV. But the confidence in those results was not yet high enough to claim a discovery.?Now the teams behind the collider's CMS and ATLAS experiments have collected higher piles of data, at higher energy levels, sparking higher expectations.

An hour-long BBC Horizon documentary focuses on the hunt for the Higgs boson.

The 5-sigma fetish
When physicists talk about their confidence, they talk in terms of statistical "sigma" levels. The higher the sigma, the less likely that the results are just a fluke. In particle physics, 3 sigma constitutes strong evidence, but it takes 5 sigma to accept the results as a discovery. At the 5-sigma level, statisticians say there's roughly one chance out of 3 million that you're leaping to the wrong conclusion, as opposed to a 1-in-1,000 chance at the 3-sigma level.?That distinction makes a big difference when you're sifting through billions upon billions of proton-on-proton collision reports.

Last year, the best that the LHC teams could do was 3.6 sigma for ATLAS, and 2.6 for CMS. Now physicists are looking for a 5.

For three weeks, the teams have been running the numbers on their experimental results in secret, so as to avoid any chance that one analysis will influence the other. Their results are to be announced during a presentation at the CERN nuclear research center in Geneva, which will be webcast starting at 9 a.m. CEST (3 a.m. ET) on July 4. Although no official word has leaked out, the unofficial word is that someone looking for a discovery could get to the magic number.

"Reports from the experiments indicate that at least one of them, if not both, will reach the 5 sigma level of significance for the Higgs signal, when they combine 2011 and 2012 data and the most sensitive channel. So, this will definitely be the long-awaited Higgs discovery announcement, and party time for HEP [high-energy physics] physicists," Columbia mathematician Peter Woit wrote on his Not Even Wrong blog a week ago.

Since then, other physicist-bloggers have been fine-tuning the expectations. Here's a selection:

  • On the Resonaances blog, physicist Adam Falkowski (a.k.a. Jester) has a countdown clock ticking toward the Higgs discovery. "It is not clear, at least to me, if either of the two experiments will pass the 5-sigma fetish. But it does not really matter. ... What's going to change next Wednesday is that the status of the Higgs will be upgraded from 'almost certain' to 'beyond reasonable doubt.'"
  • On Quantum Diaries, Southern Methodist University physicist Aidan Randle-Conde advises against trying to combine the data from the two teams to get to 5 sigma. "With all this pressure to get as much out of the data as possible, it's tempting to move too quickly and do what we can to get a discovery, but now is not the time to rush things," he writes.
  • On the?ViXra Log, Philip Gibbs says that when CERN's researchers report their progress, "it is likely that the main question they are investigating will switch from 'Is there a Higgs Boson?' to 'Is it the Standard Model Higgs boson?'"
  • On a blog titled "Of Particular Significance,"?Rutgers physicist Matt Strassler advises caution,?but also suggests getting "the cases of champagne ready, in case the time has finally come to pop the corks." He points out that a discovery announcement would by no means be the end of the story. "Even if we see strong evidence of a Higgs-like particle ... the correct understanding of that particle?? in particular, determining whether it is or isn't a 'simplest Higgs'?? may take years."
  • As we approach H-Hour, you can expect to hear more via all these outlets as well as other blogs such as Cosmic Variance?and "A Quantum Diaries Survivor."

Physicist Gigi Rolandi discusses the Higgs search in a CERN video.

Hedging on the Higgs
What Strassler and Gibbs are saying is important: Technically speaking, CERN is unlikely to announce that the Higgs boson has been definitively discovered. It's more likely that physicists will talk about a new particle that has a signature consistent with the Higgs but has to be investigated further.

CERN hinted at that approach last week in the news release announcing Wednesday's webcast. "It's a bit like spotting a familiar face from afar," said the center's director general, Rolf Heuer. "Sometimes you need closer inspection to find out whether it's really your best friend, or actually your best friend's twin."

Gigi Rolandi, a senior research physicist at CERN, used a similar analogy in a video released this week, referring to crops of corn (which he calls maize, as most Europeans do), wheat (which he calls corn) and poppy flowers. Some particles are as easy to spot as a red poppy in a wheat field, he said. But not the Higgs.?"The search for the Higgs is more similar to looking for a single plant of maize among many, many corn plants, than looking for a poppy among the corn," he said.

We'll get a foretaste of Wednesday's proceedings on Monday, when Fermilab is due to provide its final update on the Higgs boson search, based on the full set of data from the now-closed Tevatron. Will Fermilab try to steal some of CERN's thunder, at least for a couple of days? Stay tuned....

Update for 12:05 p.m. ET June 30: Some commenters are asking whether there are practical applications for the discoveries that could be made at the Large Hadron Collider. I addressed that question in a story I wrote four years ago, headlined "Discovery or Doom? Collider Stirs Debate." Please check out the article, as well as the Flash interactive on "Nightmares and Dreams" at the LHC.

Zimmerman makes new appeal for bail; judge considers

Circuit Court Judge Kenneth Lester is apparently weighing whether to grant bail to George Zimmerman after Friday's hearing. NBC's Kerry Sanders reports.

By NBC's Jamie Novogrod and msnbc.com's Kari Huus

A bail hearing in Sanford, Fla. for George Zimmerman concluded Friday after a heated exchange in which prosecutors argued for denying bond and the defense called on the judge to reinstate the defendant's?$150,000 bail, which was revoked in early June.

Circuit Court Judge Kenneth Lester was weighing the arguments and will issue his ruling by written order, a public information officer for the Seminole County court said. The spokesman did not offer the timing of that order.

Zimmerman, charged with second-degree murder in the February shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, is seeking release on bail for the second time. His initial bail of $150,000 was revoked and he was rearrested on June 3, after prosecutors argued that Zimmerman, with the aid of his wife's testimony, had misled the court about?their financial picture in the first bail hearing on April 20.

Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to the?murder charge, and asserted that he acted in self-defense.

Earlier in the three-hour proceedings, ????Zimmerman's father, Robert John Zimmerman, took the stand briefly.

After the elder Zimmerman was sworn in, defense attorney Mark O'Mara played a witness 911 tape that captured the sounds of screaming and a shot being fired during the fatal encounter between Trayvon and Zimmerman.

Under questioning by O'Mara, the elder Zimmerman said he told state investigators that the voice of the man screaming "was absolutely George's."

Assistant State Attorney Bernie de la Rionda then questioned Robert Zimmerman, asking how his son could make those screaming noises if, ?as George Zimmerman told police, Martin was covering his nose and mouth.

Robert Zimmerman responded: "From the look of my son's injuries, Trayvon Martin's hands were not just on his nose and mouth."

The court heard testimony from firefighter Kevin O'Rourke, of the Sanford Fire Department, who was called to the scene after the shooting.?O'Rourke, who said he attended to Zimmerman, answered questions about the severity of the shooter's injuries.

"I observed that he had blood on his face and the back of his head," O'Rourke said.

He said that Zimmerman's nose was "obviously deformed," agreeing with defense attorney Don West that the injury was consistent with a broken nose. But under questioning by prosecutor de la Rionda, O'Rourke said he didn't diagnose Zimmerman with a broken nose.

The court was also shown the last minutes of a video taken by Sanford police on Feb. 27 in which Zimmerman discusses wounds to his nose and head.

Zimmerman appeared at the hearing wearing a grey suit, after?O'Mara had successfully argued that showing up in prison garb and shackles could damage his client's chances of getting a fair trial.

Martin's older brother Jahvaris Martin attended the hearing, along with Trayvon's parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton. The family was escorted -- and sat with -- family attorney Benjamin Crump.

Following the money
At the start of the hearing, the first witness to testify, at the request of Zimmerman's defense attorney Mark O'Mara, was an accounting expert Adam MaGill, who detailed a series of money transfers conducted by the defendant's wife, using money contributed for his legal defense.

MaGill, who was called by the defense, said he was asked by O'Mara to look at records of money transfers from Zimmerman's PayPal account to the official legal defense fund later established by O'Mara.

The judge determined that Zimmerman and his wife Shellie misled the court about their finances his first bail hearing.

Shellie Zimmerman?testified at that April 20 proceeding that she did not know how much money was in a PayPal account set up for contributions to her husband's legal defense.

In recorded telephone conversations from jail prior to that date, Zimmerman and his wife appear to discuss ? in thinly?disguised code ? the amount of money in the account, and he instructs her to make a series of transfers to other accounts, the prosecution charges. (Read original report.)

Special Prosecutor Angela Corey used the recordings to persuade?the judge to revoke the original bond for George Zimmerman.?Shellie Zimmerman was arrested on June 12, charged with perjury and released on $1,000 bond.

She was not present at Friday's bond hearing for her husband.

O?Mara told NBC on Thursday that if Zimmerman is released on bond, he would go back into hiding for his own safety. The shooting death of Martin, an unarmed black teenager, in February has stirred an emotional national debate about race, gun rights and "stand your ground" laws like the one in Florida that use a broad definition of self-defense.

NBC's Lisa Lampkin contributed to this report.

HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 Color Printer M551dn

The HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 Color Printer M551dn ($899 direct) printed out our business applications suite at a near-record clip for a color laser, and its output quality is above average, making it suitable for any standard business need, including printing out basic marketing materials. This well-rounded printer (which also has a fairly low cost per printed page) is an easy pick as an Editors' Choice workhorse color printer for a smallish business with medium to heavy-duty printing needs.

The M551dn measures 15.8 by 20.2 by 19.8 inches (HWD), larger than you?d want to share a desk with, and weighs 76 pounds, so it is best to use two people to move it. Controls on the front panel next to the small, color LCD are minimal: Buttons for Home, OK, Cancel, and Help. The display?s color is used primarily to show ink cartridge levels.

Standard paper capacity is 600 sheets, split between a 500-sheet main tray and a 100-sheet multipurpose feeder. The printer comes with an automatic duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper. (A version without the duplexer, the M551n, is available from HP for $699.) An optional 500-sheet paper tray ($319 direct) is available, for a maximum paper capacity of 1,100 sheets. The M551xh ($1,399 direct) adds the second 500-sheet tray as standard, plus an encrypted 250-GB hard drive.

The M551DN offers USB and Ethernet connectivity. I tested it over an Ethernet connection using a computer running Windows Vista.

HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 Color Printer M551dn

Print Speed

I timed the M551DN on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), at an effective 9.0 pages per minute (ppm). That's a bit short of our record (9.5 ppm) for a color laser, and a very good speed considering its 33 page-per-minute rated speed for both color and black-and-white printing that?s based on printing text documents without graphics or photos?our test suite includes text pages, graphics pages, and pages with mixed content.

The Editors' Choice Xerox Phaser 6280DN ($649 direct, 4 stars), with a rated speed of 31 pages per minute for monochrome and 26 for color, took more than twice as long to finish the same tests, at an effective 4.5 ppm, while we timed the OKI C610DN ($789 list, 4 stars), rated at 34 pages per minute for monochrome and 32 for color printing, at an effective 6.7 ppm.

Output Quality

The M551DN?s overall output quality is above average, thanks to very good graphics and photo quality. Text quality is typical for a laser, which is to say good enough for any business use short of demanding desktop publishing applications that use very small fonts.

With graphics, colors were bright and looked reasonably true. Some black backgrounds weren?t quite as dark as I would have liked, and some very thin colored lines against black backgrounds could have been sharper, but there were no other issues worth mentioning. The graphics are fine for printing out PowerPoint presentations, and I?d feel comfortable handing the output out to clients or colleagues I was seeking to impress.

Photo quality was slightly above par. Colors looked slightly off in a couple of prints, but most approached true photo quality. Taken together, the text, graphics, and photos should be suitable for simple marketing materials like handouts or trifold brochures, or for real estate handouts showing photos of properties.

Running Costs

The M551DN has reasonably low running costs of 1.8 cents per monochrome page and 13 cents per color page. These trump the 2.8 cents per monochrome page and 13.9 cents of the Xerox 6280DN, while lagging the OKI C610's per-page costs of 1.5 and 10.9 cents per monochrome and color pages, respectively.

The HP M551DN offers a winning combination of fast speed, above-par output quality, and a reasonably low cost per page. It brings enough to the table to make it an Editors' Choice as a workhorse color printer for smaller offices with medium to heavy-duty printing demands. The OKI C610DN has lower running costs and better paper handling options, but is slower and lags on output quality.

At the end of 2011, the Editors' Choice Xerox Phaser 6280DN was officially discontinued, but remaining stock is still being sold by Xerox and various etailers at a considerable discount. Its output quality, particularly for text, is slightly better than the M551DN. Its running costs, however, are higher than the HP's, both standard and optional paper capacity is lower, and it took twice as long as the M551DN to print out our business applications suite. If output quality is paramount, the 6280DN may be a better choice, but the HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 Color Printer M551DN offers a much better balance between quality, speed, and running costs.?

Slow Up The Drama That You Saw And Become Your Own Healer ...

You?re here to measure and to study from your day-to-day encounters. You can allow your experiences to remain toxic to everyone energetically, mentally, psychologically, spiritually, and actual physical, or you may well transmute your experiences into opportunities, certainly to expand knowledgeable awareness and Recognizing.

Ernest Holmes wrote: ?Life is what consciousness makes it, ? meaning some of our individual consciousness, pursued by local and world wide consciousness, based in the individuals who include it. Through this healing, we are meant to increase our understanding in addition to compassion for pains, the wounded, those who wound ? even if we should choose to not any longer associate with these, and better Rip Curl Commissions understand and appreciate your dynamics and need for healing.

Getting stuck with anger and bitterness keeps us hurt and leads us being stuck in performance mode. Our bodies get enslaved by the chemicals released when we experience any feelings often, positive and negative. As as a result of chemicals released often in respond to negative emotions, we experience a predilection, and addiction, to trap wrath and resentment in this particular energy field. We imprison ourselves with each other, like cell bars on our psyche. We watch the fun side of living and creating from within our enclosure, too invested or embroiled in dramas to allow them go.

Suppose energy field approximately you. It?s with you anywhere you go. Picture all some of those angers and resentments like various sizes and shapes of debris : like debris and additionally trash thrown in to a stream ? this snags and hangs all the way up and blocks that flow. We are designed and allowed to feel unpleasant emotions because of the vital messages All of our feelings convey, but not to give bad emotions a permanent home inside our energy field, which in turn becomes a arena of dramas, beyond and attracted. Getting stuck in drama keeps you with perceiving, feeling, knowing ? a greater Picture, a Large Truth ? preferred examined, processed, and integrated from your spiritual perspective.

A significant part of just what you?re here you need to do is to increase your conscious awareness, which includes changing inefficient thinking and emotions that maintain you from living your best inner and outside life experience. Better you do this ? make those changes ? the more Law of Attractive force can cease to make matching scenarios to help what?s negative within your energy field. Think back during the last three to few months, or longer, and have yourself how many unpleasant scenarios have been either repetitions or variations on the theme.

If your dramas typically repeat or drama looks like it?s how your lifestyle experience goes, you can halt and really look at this. You can remind yourself that this thoughts directly promote your manifestations, much like your perceptions and additionally interpretations of happenings contribute to how you encounter them. You can look into what needs to swap. You may will need to release addictions to methods for thinking, perceiving, believing you must or must feel a particular way, behaviors, and additionally actions you carry. Some events and moments that you saw will be striking (it isn?t concerning false belief that when you just do something immediately, you?ll never are having issues ever again : it?s about practicing to the stage of knowing you can manage yourself effectively ? trust you to ultimately act from condition ? through such times ? and study from them, whether just irritations or unquestionably dramatic). Maybe your initial reaction is to respond with even more drama or from your conditioned drama effect. However, if you practice pulling returning to re-vision, re-perceive, in addition to re-frame, you are approach such experiences from a what-productive-thing-can-be-done-or-learned mode. This may be outward, but it can be a seed at the inner level primary.

The seed of who that you?re ? your most effective self and preferred life ? is usually inside you, possibly buried under a lifetime of beliefs that will misdirect you, which often misdirects your energy making you ?misdirect? Law of Attraction. Begin this practice of realizing this. Appreciate that you can choose to change what?s in your energy field, designed to change your lifetime, how you see drama, and how i respond to it.

Understand that what we feel ? ones feelings ? are messengers and never to be controlled. Your emotions are what we do with or of what you feel, that will be managed. Though a lot of people avoid it, processing negative emotions is necessary, but for the reason for traveling through the process and arriving someplace, not processing to the stage where it becomes a way of life, with no advancement made. People enslaved drama tend providing identifying with in addition to processing dramas ? or not processing them whatsoever ? to exchange healing and living.

Make an effort to cease looking forward to future experiences influenced by any negativity through the past, or producing, by default, negative experiences which were within your control. Appreciate that each and every experience holds something that you see and learn about you. Appreciate positive potentials and possibilities so they become probabilities. The island is the habitat for the largest puffin colony in the U.S. (AP Photo/explore.org, Annenberg Foundation, National Audubon Society)

(AP) ? Two high-definition cameras began streaming live video Wednesday of clown-like Atlantic puffins waddling, preening and nesting on a remote Maine island.

The National Audubon Society and explore.org teamed up to stream video from Seal Island National Wildlife Refuge to anyone with an Internet connection. Located about 20 miles offshore, the island has the largest puffin colony in the U.S.

The video marks the first time high-definition cameras have been used in North America to stream video of Atlantic puffins, said Steve Kress, director of Audubon's seabird restoration program.

One camera shows puffins and other seabirds on the island's rocky ledges, flapping their wings and coming and going while waves crash on shore. The other camera is underground, inside a burrow showing a puffin in her nesting site. It is so close to the bird you can look into its eye.

The goal is to engage the public and spur interest in seabird restoration, said Kress, who has worked with puffins for nearly four decades.

"About a third of all seabird species in the world are threatened with extinction," Kress said. "It's the most troubled group of birds in the world. And the puffin is the bird among seabirds that people can relate to."

The Atlantic puffin is sometimes called the "clown of the sea" with its colorful striped beak, its diminutive stature and the comical way it waddles.

The birds live across a vast expanse of the North Atlantic from Maine to northern Russia, but they almost disappeared from Maine when settlers hunted them to near-extinction for food and feathers in the 1800s. By 1900, only small numbers of puffins nested on just two Maine islands.

Kress has been working to restore puffin and other seabird populations to Maine's islands since 1973, when he founded the Project Puffin restoration project.

Today, puffins breed on five Maine islands, with Seal Island having the largest population, about 550 pairs. The birds arrive each April and leave in August, spending the rest of their lives at sea.

Scientists count 3 million to 4 million pairs of Atlantic puffins worldwide, with roughly 60 percent of them breeding in Iceland.

Project Puffin put a web camera on Maine's distant Matinicus Rock, home to about 300 pairs of puffins, in 2005 in an effort to stream video, Kress said. But the video was low-quality and worked only intermittently.

The latest project, with its high-definition cameras, gives views of puffins that were previously unavailable.

The project also includes a third camera on Seal Island that is aimed at common terns, and a fourth camera on another island elsewhere off Maine that's focused on a family of ospreys.

The project is funded by explore.org, a philanthropic organization in Santa Monica, Calif., and a division of the Annenberg Foundation.

Tom Pollak, executive producer of explore.org, said his organization has other cameras streaming video of a panda, a polar bear, a beluga whale and other animals, with the aim of having people "fall in love with the world."

"The feedback has been very positive," he said. "One of the best experiences we had was when we covered a polar bear migration in Manitoba and somebody commented, 'This is better than football.'"

Kristin McCracken: Zero Shades of Grey: The Invisible War Sheds Light on the Military's Ugliest Secret

Kirby Dick?s important new documentary unravels the truth about the prevalence of sexual assault in today?s U.S. military ? and the institutional cover-ups that further denigrate the victims. The movie is hard to watch, but the realities are even harder to ignore.

The Invisible War

Courtesy of Cinedigm/Docurama Films

In civilian life, it?s hard enough for rape victims to get the justice they deserve. Our legal system?s foundation of ?innocent until proven guilty? leads to he said/she said situations where proof is not always readily available. Still, the investigations are run by a third-party justice system without an automatic investment in either side of any given case.

In the U.S. military ? where women have served alongside men for over 70 years, though the numbers still skew heavily male ? such unbiased investigations do not exist. Quite often, women (and men, though the majority of victims are women) who are assaulted must report their attacks to commanding officers who have a close relationship with the perpetrator ? or, in some cases, are the perpetrator. Clearly, this is a direct conflict of interest of the highest order. As a result, only a small fraction of cases are ever prosecuted to the fullest extent. In the worst cases, the tables are turned on the victim in the most egregious ways: they are accused of ? and punished for ? lying, adultery, etc.?

Courtesy of Cinedigm/Docurama Films

The Invisible War (directed by Kirby Dick, Outrage, TFF 2009) uncovers the ugly truth about women ? and men ? who are twice-victimized by the military in which they proudly served: first, by their attackers, and second, by an ingrained set of institutional policies that treat their attacks as pesky flies that need to be swatted. In interview after heart-wrenching interview, the victims? stories paint a picture of a system that is severely broken, a pattern that exists in all four branches of service.

Acute pain ? both physical and emotional ? is evident on a diverse parade of faces, as the survivors (and their loved ones, who are also deeply affected) take us from their initial elation and pride in serving their country through the various betrayals that are layered, deep, and lasting. Most even admit they have contemplated suicide, which reminds the viewer of the recent statistic that more soldiers have killed themselves this year than have died in combat. (It should be noted that most of the assaults recounted in the film did not happen during deployment overseas; they happened right here at home, on bases as prestigious as the Marine Barracks Washington.)

At a preview screening last Thursday, director Kirby Dick and producer Amy Ziering talked about the five years of interviews, investigations and deep-dive research ? including numerous Freedom of Information Act requests ? that led to the release of the film. They have taken a two-pronged approach to marketing the film ? grassroots and ?grass-tops,? with the latter an attempt to show the film to those who decide policy in the government ? illustrating their hope that The Invisible War can have a real impact on effecting concrete change. Indeed, a heartening coda to the film explains how, two days after Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta viewed the film in April, he immediately made a policy change, whereby commanders are no longer the sole decision-maker as to whether rape charges go forward or not. And just last week, after Dick and Ziering appeared on MSNBC?s Morning Joe, Vice President Joe Biden reached out to the filmmakers requesting a copy of the film.

Courtesy of Cinedigm/Docurama Films

There is much debate and rhetoric ? on both sides of the aisle ? about the levels of support we as a country show the soldiers and veterans who serve and protect us daily. While there is no guarantee that they will be safe from harm in combat situations, what should never be in question is their day-to-day safety among their colleagues.

How can you help?

? See the film. The Invisible War opened on Friday in select cities (NYC, San Francisco, Santa Monica, and Washington). In the coming weeks, look for it in cities across the country.

? If the film is not showing in your city, request a screening or host one of your own.

? Make your voice heard. The filmmakers have set up a #notinvisible campaign across the Web and social media. To find out more, visit notinvisible.org.

NIH awards $6.1 million grant to GUMC to establish Center of Excellence for Health Disparities

WASHINGTON -- The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has awarded a $6.1 million grant over the next five years to Georgetown University Medical Center to establish the Center of Excellence for Health Disparities in Our Nation's Capital (CEHD). The vision of the Center of Excellence is to eliminate or dramatically reduce health disparities with a particular focus on minority populations in Washington, D.C.

Part of Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC), the CEHD anchors a broader Georgetown University initiative that seeks to reduce and eventually eliminate health disparities by convening and leveraging the breadth of academic disciplines from across its campuses. Powered by this unified effort and Georgetown's commitment to social justice, the CEHD will expand and strengthen collaborations with other academic, government, nonprofit, faith-based and community partners to have maximum impact on disparities.

"The Center of Excellence requires a fully dedicated and engaged University community to achieve meaningful gains toward reducing health disparities," says Howard J. Federoff, M.D., Ph.D., executive vice president for health sciences and executive dean of the School of Medicine at GUMC. "One of the first goals is to build new, and strengthen existing, relationships between the scientific and lay communities so that we can expedite evidence-based ways of impacting health disparities -- particularly those affecting African Americans in the District."

The African American population is the largest minority population within the District of Columbia and is disproportionately affected by chronic diseases. As such, the CEHD will conduct critical health disparities research in breast cancer and stroke. Washington, D.C., has the highest rate of breast cancer deaths in the country, and stroke is the 4th leading cause of death.

"We know we can make immediate inroads toward reducing health disparities in breast cancer and stroke because of our previous work in these areas," explains Lucile Adams-Campbell, Ph.D. associate dean for community health and outreach for GUMC, and co-principal investigator of the grant. "We have bridges in place, we have research-based, culturally appropriate evidence to guide our efforts and now we have NIH funding to help expand our delivery capabilities."

Adams-Campbell is also associate director for Minority Health and Health Disparities Research at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, a part of GUMC.

Other co-investigators on the grant include Chelsea Kidwell, M.D., director of the Stroke Center at GUMC and Phyllis Magrab, Ph.D., director of the Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development. Adams-Campbell, Kidwell and Magrab are pioneers in the medical field all with extensive experience in research and practice with the underserved. The grant also includes support for collaboration with Howard University, which has an historic commitment to minority populations. Georgetown and Howard have an existing partnership -- the Georgetown-Howard Universities Center for Clinical and Translational Science, which was established in 2010 through a Clinical and Translational Science Award from the National Institutes of Health.

"The mission of the Center of Excellence is to capitalize on current and future knowledge gained from ongoing research and translate it to actionable practice in the community practice that truly makes a difference," says Magrab. "But our work cannot and will not end there. We need to influence policies at the local and national level that best serve the underserved."

"We hear a lot about barriers to better care, and one of those barriers is a lack of communication between the medical community and the real world," explains Kidwell. "For example, we know African Americans are at a higher risk of having strokes and have worse outcomes. While the reasons for both issues vary, we know how to reduce the risk and we have some understanding about how to ensure better outcomes. Our challenge is take this information across the bridge and into the community where it can have a major impact."

Adams-Campbell will lead the research effort involving breast cancer. She says understanding breast cancer risk in African Americans is becoming increasingly challenging with the existence of co-morbidities such as diabetes, obesity, and hypertension.

"With breast cancer, we know that a woman's weight gain in her postmenopausal years is like adding fuel to the fire," Adams-Campbell says. "Now that we know that, we need to act on that information."

Adams-Campbell's recently opened community-based office is positioned to address this challenge with on-site nutritionists, exercise physiologists and exercise physiology and "exergaming" labs. All are available in the Southeast Washington, DC location to directly engage minority and underserved populations.

An additional goal of the CEHD is to promote careers in minority health research by creating educational and training programs. Training and education will include targeted mentorship to postdoctoral and junior faculty colleagues to help them advance their research interests. A significant focus will also include embedding cultural and linguistic competence in its program goals.

About Georgetown University Medical Center

Georgetown University Medical Center is an internationally recognized academic medical center with a three-part mission of research, teaching and patient care (through MedStar Health). GUMC's mission is carried out with a strong emphasis on public service and a dedication to the Catholic, Jesuit principle of cura personalis -- or "care of the whole person." The Medical Center includes the School of Medicine and the School of Nursing & Health Studies, both nationally ranked; Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, designated as a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute; and the Biomedical Graduate Research Organization (BGRO), which accounts for the majority of externally funded research at GUMC including a Clinical Translation and Science Award from the National Institutes of Health. In fiscal year 2010-11, GUMC accounted for 85 percent of the university's sponsored research funding.

The CEHD is supported by a grant from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, a part of the National Institutes of Health (#1P60MD006920-01).

Channing Tatum Denies He Stole 'Magic Mike' Stripper Moves

'We created everything from a fictional place,' Tatum says, responding to allegations by former stripper co-workers.

Channing Tatum is reacting to a group of male dancers who allege that the actor quite literally stole their moves for his new movie, "Magic Mike," which takes place in the shirtless world of male strippers.

Two male dancers, Thomas "Awesome" Austin and London Steele, who danced with Tatum while he was a stripper in Florida, told TMZ last week that the experiences in the film, and even Tatum's character's name (Magic Mike), are all their own. Austin told the website, "He only danced for four months. How many events could have happened to him?" He added that even Tatum's move in the film, the Hot Seat, is all his own.

Director Steven Soderbergh has said that the film is loosely based on Tatum's experiences as a male dancer. And in a new interview, Tatum is opening up about the claims against him.

"Those guys have been trying to make money off of me since I got into this business," Tatum told reporters, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "Look, there's nothing that's factual in this whole movie other than that I was an 18-year-old kid and went into this world and I dropped out of college from playing football and was living on my sister's couch. There's not one character that I took from my real life; this is just a world that I went into, and I had a perspective on. And we created everything from a fictional place."

"Magic Mike" opens Friday, and Tatum is going into opening week with no ill will for his former co-workers. "I don't want to say anything bad about them because they're part of the reason why I think this world is so interesting," he said. "They're very interesting, intriguing and bizarre characters, and I'm thankful for weird people out there. They're some of the most creative people."

The June 29 film release also stars "True Blood" actor Joe Manganiello, "White Collar" star Matt Bomer and Matthew McConaughey.

In an interview with MTV News, Tatum recalled how the film came out of a conversation he had with Soderbergh. "I was having a beer with Soderbergh — we were doing a movie together — and I told him about [my past stripping]," he said. "I'd been doing it for eight months of my life when I was, like, 18 or 19, and he said, 'We gotta make a movie out of that.' And I was like, 'Why? Why do we need to do that?' And he said, 'I've never seen that world on film before.' And then we really started talking about that, and we thought it would be really hilarious but still grounded in reality."

Smallest and largest fetuses at greater risk of being stillborn, research finds

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? The tiniest and the heaviest fetuses are at much higher risk of being stillborn than those of average weight, new research has found.

Fetuses who are "severely small for gestational age," or weigh below the bottom one percentile of all fetuses, disproportionately account for about six per cent of all stillbirths, according to researchers at St. Michael's Hospital.

Fetuses that are "severely large for gestational age," or weigh above the 99th percentile, account for nearly one per cent of stillbirths. "In this study of all registered liveborn and stillborn infants in Ontario, extreme underweight and overweight states confer the highest risk of stillbirth," said Drs. Joel Ray and Marcelo Urquia, authors of the paper that appears in the current issue of the Journal of Perinatology.

Stillbirth is traditionally defined as the death of a fetus at more than 23 weeks of gestation weighing 500 grams or more. However, Drs. Ray and Urquia included babies born starting as early as 20 weeks of gestation on the grounds that maternal-fetal bonding is well established at that point, since most mothers-to-be have undergone a Level 2 ultrasound detailing the unborn baby's developing bones and organs.

Including those babies provides new information about the degree to which low and high weights are associated with stillbirths, including those before the point of viability, Dr. Ray said. That, in turn, may help doctors better decide at which time point it is better to allow a pregnancy to continue so the fetus can grow, or to deliver a premature baby who might otherwise die in the womb.

The rate of stillbirths in industrialized countries is about six per 1,000, of which half occur after 27 weeks of gestation. In poorer countries, the rate is up to five times higher. Stillbirths are more common than the death of a baby after birth, such as from prematurity or as a result of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Yet, stillbirths have largely been ignored by our society, especially in terms of their emotional effect on the mother, her partner and extended family, Dr. Ray said.

The researchers examined records of all 767,016 live births and all 4,697 stillbirths in Ontario between 2002 and 2007. They said that because they looked at so many births, they could also make statistically precise estimations of the impact of extremely low birthweight on the risk of stillbirth.

They found that 19 per cent of stillbirths occur in fetuses under the tenth percentile of weight. But being below the first percentile of weight meant the fetus faced a 9.5 times higher risk of being stillborn than babies who are within the average weight range, between the 40th to 60th weight percentiles.

Dr. Ray said that when fetuses are severely small for gestational age, it usually means there is a problem with the placenta. Fetuses who are severely large for gestational age generally so because of the mom having diabetes or obesity.

The authors conclude that since more than 95 per cent of women in the industrialized world receive a Level 2 anatomical ultrasound before 22 weeks gestation, fetal weight should be estimated and reported at this time of the ultrasound, as a standard practice. In doing so, the early presence of a small or large fetus may help guide ongoing ultrasound surveillance for growth and well-being.
