The French media and telecommunications group Vivendi posted on Thursday a 43 percent drop in second quarter net profit owing to higher taxes and a decline in the group's core earnings.

Investors welcomed the second quarter figures, and Vivendi shares showed a gain of 3.44 percent to 15.63 euros in morning trades on the Paris stock exchange, which was down by 0.20 percent overall.

With a political impasse in India's Parliament holding up all government decision-making, and the central bank refusing to reduce interest rates, companies have shied away from investments.

"We have to be brave and courageous to launch an attack and put pressure on them (spinners). Then the other batsmen can bat confidentially," Taylor asserted.
Ashwin and Ojha took 18 wickets between them in the Hyderabad Test, with the Tamil Nadu offie picking up dozen in both innings.
Hinting that there would be no change in the batting order so as to give another chance for those who played in the first Test, Taylor said they would get another opportunity to perform and fight back.
Echoing Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Taylor said the first session would be important for both teams as it would test the ability and strength of the players with bat or ball.
"We have experienced in the last three-four Tests that it takes one bad session to ruin a match. We don't want to look too far ahead. We want to take Test by Test and session by session," Taylor observed.
Noting that it was too early to gauge the pitch and how it would behave as the game progressed, Taylor said the wicket condition would depend on the weather as it had been raining in Bangalore over the days with an overcast sky most of the time.
"We have to see how much sun the pitch gets as it has been mostly cloudy since we landed here Tuesday and started practicing Wednesday. Though it (pitch) looks hard at top, it could be soft beneath. It is bound to change depending on the weather we get during the match," Taylor pointed out.
On his batting form as he scored only two hundreds in the last 30 Test innings, Taylor said though it was not great, he felt he was not far away from making big runs as he was working hard to bat well and stay at the pitch for longer.
Asked for his comments on the criticism of former New Zealand coach Mark Greatbatch that the Kiwis failed to play spinners in the sub-continent despite specialised training on how to play them back home, Taylor said there were no two opinions on the need to tackle spinners if they had to win in the sub-continent.
"We are great critics of ourselves. I am also too critical about myself. I am disappointed over how I have played and I would like to improve in the next innings," he quipped.
The Kiwis are hoping to level the series by taking advantage of the damp pitch and its green tinge if the weather continues to remain inclement and the sky overcast.

MOSCOW (AP) ? The bodies of two slain women were found in Russia beneath a scrawled message demanding freedom for the jailed members of the Pussy Riot band, officials said Thursday.

"I am sorry that some freaks are using Pussy Riot's band name," Nikolai Polozov was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying.
Russia's Investigative Committee said the women, aged 76 and 38, were killed late last week in their apartment in the central city of Kazan with the words "Free Pussy Riot" written on the wall in English, "presumably" with blood.
The substance has not yet been confirmed, it said in the statement.
The agency did not provide the women's names or reveal details about their occupations or whether they had any connection to the band. The Russian tabloid Lifenews quoted an unnamed investigator as saying their faces and bodies were disfigured by multiple stab wounds.
An investigator in Kazan said the murderer was either psychotic or a drug addict who was trying to cover up the crime by attributing it to the band's supporters.
The killer "was trying to avoid suspicion" by misleading police, investigator Andrey Sheptitsky said in televised remarks.
That sense of caution was ignored by many Russian media outlets.
Kristina Potupchik, a pro-Putin blogger and former spokeswoman for a militant youth group known for its violent pranks against opposition and Kremlin critics, said in a post that the band's supporters "will not get away" after the killing. She also compared them to U.S. mass murderer Charles Manson, who also used the blood of his victims to write on the walls of their houses.
The leader of an Orthodox youth group that has accosted and assaulted Pussy Riot supporters claimed that they are capable of committing "any" crime.

"The first couple of innings everything was up," Miley said. "I was able to make the adjustment, but it didn't work out."

Cruising along at 24mph I thought a few times that I should slow down. 50 miles is a long ride, especially alone, no matter how many times I?ve done it. I didn?t slow down though.
I had felt bad all week leading up to Saturday. I?m getting up at 4:45am now to train, so I?m perpetually sleepy in addition to being physically tired a lot of the time. My shoulder has been hurting for about 3 weeks and that?s had me down a little. I swam twice last week instead of my normal 3x. I was questioning why I keep coming back for more of this. Thats normal at this stage of training for a long race, but it doesn?t make it any easier.
Friday night Mommy and I went out to dinner. I had a cheeseburger, covered with chili, and jalapenos ? not really the meal you order the night before a key workout the next morning. I ate the whole burger?and the fries?and two large beers. The beginnings?of checking out mentally on my racing season was in full swing.
Saturday itself was hectic. Mommy went to a CPR training from 8am-1pm. It was a busy day and with each passing minute it got warmer outside, eventually up to 91 degrees by the time I was able to get out for my ride. As I got dressed I drug my feet. My attitude was bad. I told Mommy I didn?t feel like going. And I almost bailed on the ride when Mommy told me she was worried about me riding at that hour of the day (3pm). I try not to ride when people are awake and on the roads. I went though.
A few miles into the ride I was still hammering. You should slow down. I?ve gotten good at listening to that voice. The voice that says ?ride within yourself. Save something for later. You can only do what you can do. It?s just a training ride.? I always listen. Not Saturday. ?What the heck,? I thought and kept riding hard. When I was wrestling Coach Simpson, and Dan Gable at camp in Iowa, taught me that I had to believe I was capable of anything. If I didn?t believe I was the best guy every time I walked into a room I wasn?t going to excel. I believed them, that I was good enough to do great things and I deserved it. When I shut that negative voice off years ago I accomplished all of my goals. So I shut the voice off for a day of training on the bike.
It was late in the day. It was hot. My shoulder hurt. I was stressed out. So what?
I figured I would stop at the turnaround and ride home easy. I reached 25 miles in 1:12 minutes ? the same pace I?d ridden at the Chattanooga Waterfront Triathlon. That?s a solid ride, I thought. I turned around and started home, riding easier. But before I knew it was cranking again. Comfortably hard on the flats, easy uphill, biggest gear possible down hill. It crossed my mind that I may hit the wall before home and coast home at 12mph. The bonk may come. I shut the voice down again and thought about something Bruce Gennari told a week or two ago: ?DTH ? drop the hammer. Never think about how good or bad you?re doing, Just focus on the task at hand.? So I rode. It wasn?t easy. It wasn?t hard. It just was.
I ended up even splitting the ride. I?came home at 2 hours and 24 minutes. Roughly 21mph for 50 hilly miles. That?s faster than all of my half iron bike splits except Orlando (flat and fast). As a reward I ran 3 miles at an 8 minute pace as a transition run and I considered making it an even 10 miles ? luckily common sense finally stepped in.
So I wonder what keeps me from riding like that on all of my long rides. It could be laziness, or prevailing coaching wisdom, or maybe it?s that voice in my head that tells me I wasn?t designed to be a fast triathlete.
This morning I capped the weekend off with a 12 mile run. My fastest run in excess of 10 miles since this time last year.

"Low-income children represent a vulnerable population," says Engel de Abreu. "Studying cognitive processes in this population is of great societal importance and represents a significant advancement in our understanding of childhood development."
Existing research, conducted with older bilingual children and bilingual adults from middle class backgrounds, suggests that knowing two languages may have different effects on different aspects of executive functioning: while being bilingual seems to have a positive influence on the ability to direct and focus attention (control), researchers have found no such benefit for how people encode and structure knowledge in memory (representation).
Engel de Abreu and her colleagues hypothesized that this pattern would also hold for younger bilingual children who were low-income.
A total of 80 second graders from low-income families participated in the study. Half of the children were first or second generation immigrants to Luxembourg, originally from Northern Portugal, who spoke both Luxembourgish and Portuguese on a daily basis. The other half of the children lived in Northern Portugal and spoke only Portuguese.
The researchers first tested the children's vocabularies by asking them to name items presented in pictures. Both groups completed the task in Portuguese and the bilingual children also completed the task in Luxembourgish.
To examine how the children represented knowledge in memory, the researchers asked them to find a missing piece that would complete a specific geometric shape. The researchers also measured the children's memory, using two different tasks to see how much visual information the children could keep in mind at a given time.
The children then participated in two tasks that looked at their ability to direct and focus their attention when distractions were present. In the first task, they had to find and match 20 pairs of spacecrafts as quickly as possible, a task that depended on their ability to ignore all the non-matching spacecrafts. In the second task, the children were presented with a row of yellow fish on a computer screen and they had to press a button to indicate which direction the fish in the center was facing. The other fish either pointed in the same or opposite direction of the fish in the middle.
Although the bilingual children knew fewer words than their monolingual peers, and did not show an advantage for representation tasks, they performed better on the control tasks than did the monolingual children, just as the researchers hypothesized.
"This is the first study to show that, although they may face linguistic challenges, minority bilingual children from low-income families demonstrate important strengths in other cognitive domains," says Engel de Abreu.
The researchers believe that the findings could inform efforts to reduce the achievement gap between children of different socioeconomic backgrounds. "Our study suggests that intervention programs that are based on second language teaching are a fruitful avenue for future research," says Engel de Abreu. "Teaching a foreign language does not involve costly equipment, it widens children's linguistic and cultural horizons, and it fosters the healthy development of executive control."
