Teachers Have Enough To Do Without Having To Do It All

DEAR ABBY: "Chaplin, Conn., Reader" (Aug. 16) suggested that teachers should be sharing life lessons with children. Unfortunately, many people in our society believe it -- including parents. Students come to us with ever-increasing deficits in many non-curricular areas. But it is not the job of public educators to teach them the importance of families, helping grandparents, caring for household pets, etc.

If these things come up in the course of the day and there is a need to address them, we try to clarify any misconceptions. But taking time to prepare and teach a lesson on any of these small but important subjects is no longer an option. The demands placed on teachers today are vast and complex. Just getting parents to follow through at home on school responsibilities is a job in itself. Many of them don't seem to think they need to help their kids be successful in school. -- SEEN IT ALL IN MICHIGAN

DEAR SEEN IT ALL: Thank you for your comments. The letter from "Chaplin, Conn. Reader" brought a huge number of responses on this issue, primarily from teachers:

DEAR ABBY: I have worked in an elementary school for nine years. A teacher is a counselor, doctor, social worker and behavioral specialist all in one. Kids come to class dirty, hungry, tired, with no manners or clue about the alphabet or counting. Teachers have halted lessons because a child is in a meltdown. Some kids have never held a pencil or scissors, and don't know how to share or take directions from an adult. It's sad to hear them say they have no crayons at home or books to read. As for testing, unless the parents do their job, we will see little improvement in scores. And no, I don't work in a big-city school district -- this is a nice suburban area. -- STILL LOVE MY JOB

DEAR ABBY: I spend half my teaching time on behavioral issues, social skills, bullying, how to work in a group and just trying to hold kids' attention. Many children today are so used to constant stimulation from TV, video games, texting, etc., that their attention spans max out at 30 seconds. I practically have to sing and dance to reach them or they tune out. I suggest "Chaplin" go to a school, volunteer, and try to become a part of the solution instead of adding to the burden of already overworked teachers. -- TEACHING IN TACOMA

DEAR ABBY: You said parents should be the ones teaching the kinds of things the Connecticut reader wrote about. Then you asked where the parents are. Let me tell you! They're too busy on their smartphones talking to or fighting with their latest boy- or girlfriend, playing electronic games, out drinking and partying so much they don't know or care where their kids are. Parents who actually spend time with their children and give them undivided attention are sadly in the minority. Those who help to teach them are even fewer in number. -- KANSAS READER

DEAR ABBY: You are correct that teachers are overwhelmed by many curricular, legislative and administrative demands. However, educators can continually instill many of these life lessons into students by acting as positive role models who consistently demonstrate core values such as integrity, respect and determination. Students tend to do and learn what they see even more than what they are told -- by parents and teachers. -- ANNE IN NEVADA

DEAR ABBY: I am a retired physical education teacher, One day during a health class, a mother of one of my students came to school and told me I should teach "morals and manners" to her daughter. My response: "Ma'am, if you couldn't do that in 14 years, I can't do it in 40 minutes a day." -- REMEMBERS IT WELL

Sandy likely to hit car buyers in the wallet

7 hrs.

With much of the Eastern Seaboard still digging out and drying out from Superstorm Sandy estimates now put the damage at anywhere up to $50 billion, perhaps more.? But in the weeks to come, even consumers as far away as the West Coast could feel the pinch.

That is likely to be especially true for car buyers.? Early estimates suggest that tens, perhaps hundreds of thousands of vehicles were damaged to the point they will need to be replaced.? And that is likely to drive up prices for both new and used vehicles in the weeks and months ahead, experts warn.

If there?s a positive side for consumers it could mean better prices for those looking to trade in a car. For the industry, it?s likely to add even more momentum to the U.S. automotive market?s ongoing recovery.

?The extent of the damage from the superstorm remains to be seen. But experts are already trying to make some comparisons to the trio of hurricanes that slashed through the Gulf Coast region in 2005, destroying an estimated 640,000 vehicles.

?The damage from this storm was more widespread across a more populous area than was hit by Katrina, so the number of vehicles that will need to be replaced will likely be much bigger,? warns Ricky Beggs, vice president of the Black Book, a major source of pricing information on used, as well as new, vehicles.

Romney Accused of Personally Profiting as 1000s of Delphi Retirees Lost Pensions

In fact, the impact will have a ?ripple effect in other parts of the country? as dealers and customers in storm-damaged regions race to find replacement vehicles.

The first measure of the impact, suggests Beggs, will likely become apparent at the 62 wholesale automotive auctions covered by the Black Book each week. He anticipates that dealers on the East Coast will significantly increase their bidding and likely grab vehicles that would have otherwise gone to the Midwest, South or even to the Pacific Coast.

Complicating matters, used vehicles already were in short supply because of declining sales of new vehicles during the Great Recession of the last four years.? Prices had already been nudging record levels for much of 2012 and Beggs predicts there will be another ?bump? in the months ahead.

Sandy Taking Steam Out of Strong Oct. Sales

?We may be seeing anything from $200 to $600 depending on how much the need is,? he says, adding that there could be especially strong demand for pickups and full-size vans used by contractors and repair crews ? not only to replace vehicles damaged by the storm but ?because there?ll be demand for services to repair the damages from the storm, so someone who might have had one truck may now need two.?

New car prices may also be heading up, the Black Book editor cautions, especially in markets with high lease penetration, such as the Boston area.? Those customers, he anticipates, will be more likely to replace damaged vehicles with new ones.? How many other motorists buy new vehicles could depend on whether they?re covered by insurance ? and how much they get in a settlement, experts caution.

Chrysler CEO Marchionne Calls Out Romney Over False Jeep Ads

But automakers could also face demand for more vehicles from new car dealers whose lots were damaged. So, while the storm resulted in a short-term sales dip in much of the Eastern third of the U.S., the mid-term focus is much more upbeat.

And the story isn?t entirely bad for consumers, says Beggs. -?It might be a good time,? he adds, ?even this week,? for getting maximum value for a trade-in as dealers scramble to line up used vehicles to replace those destroyed by Superstorm Sandy.

'Boardwalk Empire' Season 3, Episode 7: 'Sunday Best'

Steve Buscemi and Shea Whigham in Boardwalk Empire Sunday Best

With ?Sunday Best,? Boardwalk Empire displays the proverbial calm before the storm in an exceptional episode (and that?s not a hurricane Sandy reference), proving there?s still plenty in these characters that?s not only surprising to them, but for the audience as well.

It?s Easter Sunday, and most everyone is celebrating it in his or her own unique way. In a rather fantastic opening, Eli (Shea Whigham) begins the day by hiding Easter eggs around his yard for those in his brood who are still young enough to be concerned with such things, and the two his brother is bringing along on a long overdue visit to the more modest Thompson house. Eli has been campaigning for more responsibility (and forgiveness) from Nucky (Steve Buscemi) by showing his loyalty during the recent Tabor Heights debacle, so inviting his older brother and his family over for dinner is an attempt to appeal to whatever maybe left of Nucky?s sentimental side.

The two sit on the porch as Eli struggles to find common ground with Nucky, at first attempting to talk shop and then discussing how he promised his wife June (Nisi Sturgis) he wouldn?t drink until later. As it turns out, the lack of alcohol really keeps his head clear. But there?s a lot of insight into the Thompson clan, as Eli recalls how their mother would put out three red eggs (a traditional prize in their family Easter egg hunt), while Nucky recalls how their father would keep all the money usually awarded to those who found said red eggs. Later, June tells Margaret (Kelly Mcdonald) about Eli?s feelings toward his brother, and that Nucky basically has a good heart. All this sharing about feelings prompts Margaret to unload about Nucky?s affair and his criminal dealings ? which June diffuses with her joy over the pineapple upside down cake Margaret brought.

Gretchen Mol and Billy Magnussen in Boardwalk Empire Sunday Best

Meanwhile, Richard Harrow (Jack Huston) is taking Tommy Darmody out so that Gillian (Gretchen Mol) can have the day to herself ? tending with personal issues, and what not. The two briefly discuss where Richard is headed and Gillian is adamant that her son not be around any rough language, so, naturally, Richard makes sure to take the young boy to the home of a man recently seen in a drunken bar fight. Of course, Richard?s really interested in seeing Julia Sagorsky (Wrenn Schmidt), and is willing to suffer through a meal with her father, Paul (Mark Borkowski) as a means of doing so.

As Julia explained, her father was crushed by the death of his son, and since then has taken to releasing his rage on anyone close by, or a child who happens upon the shrine to the deceased Sagorsky boy. In that regard, Paul?s hard to get a bead on; one moment, he?s berating everyone at the table, and the next, he?s handling the issue of Tommy?s request to go to the bathroom with a stern, but seemingly kindhearted reminder to ?aim that pistol straight into the bowl.? That kindheartedness evaporates quickly after Paul discovers Tommy playing with his late son?s toys. Richard swoops in and removes Tommy from the situation with a blunt threat to kill the old guy, and then manages to get Julia to come out for a bit with him and Tommy.

Basking in his glory, Richard walks along with Julia as she explains how she?s used to her father and that Richard probably shouldn?t threaten to kill him again. This grants the normally quiet Mr. Harrow an opportunity for a few hilarious lines regarding how her Easter dinner was a disaster, but that he?d had a great time. It?s tough to say whether this is going anywhere, or if the Julia/Richard outing will simply be a one-off adventure, but whatever it is that lets her understand her father is the same thing that allows Julia to speak with Richard on such a human level ? and to do things like set him a plate in a separate room so that he can dine without concern of what the others might see or think. Richard?s grand day out culminates with a photographer assuming the three are a little family unit and taking their picture. It?s a simple photo capturing Richard?s good side that could easily be seen as a husband, his wife and their child ? which couldn?t be further from the truth. Naturally, Richard returns home and pastes the photo into his scrapbook of perfectly imagined families.

Steve Buscemi and Kelly Mcdonald in Boardwalk Empire Sunday Best

While Richard and Tommy are out, Gillian welcomes unfortunate Indiana native and James Darmody look-alike Roger (Billy Magnussen) over for supper, a nice hot bath and ?rather a lot? of heroin. It was inevitable that the young man would fall prey to Gillian, and all of this probably could have been handled off screen ? given everything else that was going on in this episode ? but it at least demonstrates her willingness to do whatever it takes in order to see that her business succeeds. And, in a way, perhaps this serves as a way for her to finally close the book on Jimmy.

Gillian?s not the only one dealing with business, however. Gyp Rosetti, who it turns out is a lot like Adam Sandler?s character in Punch Drunk Love, is spending the day with his mother and his sisters berating him while an associate tells him how the Tabor Heights ordeal has left Gyp without men or money at his disposal. Gyp resigns himself to an angry outburst inside a church, bemoaning his station in life before beating a priest and taking all of the church?s collection money as payment for Joe ?The Boss? Masseria (Ivo Nandi). Turns out, Joe?s fed up with Rosetti; he can?t control him, and he can?t rely on him, so he?s ready to wash his hands of the temperamental Sicilian. That is, until Gyp appeals to Masseria?s dislike of Arnold Rothstein (Michael Stuhlbarg) and promises his boss a war that will have people calling him ?king.?

There?re many appeals in ?Sunday Best,? and one that actually manages to go over. After coming home and attempting to teach his wife how to juggle, Nucky?s appeal to Margaret is met with her telling him ?it?s too late,? both in the hour and their relationship, so he does the next best thing and calls his brother. Nucky tells Eli he appreciates how he handled things in Tabor Heights and promotes him to running the warehouse with Mickey Doyle (Paul Sparks). The question now is: with the war coming, did Nucky just put his brother on the front lines?

Deep Think: Joey Flores of Earbits on the Challenges of Building a ...

As hyperbolic as it sounds, this is generally what happens. The fetishism of music startups has as much to do with their sheer abundance as it does with the willingness of users to abandon the old for the new. But why does this migration happen, seemingly, year after year? And is there anything that startup founders can do to prevent it?

At first glance, this seems like the classic hedonic treadmill problem. We humans can be rather ungrateful creatures, because we tend to discover Turntable.fm or Songza and become overwhelmed with happiness only to quickly return to a relatively normal state of satisfaction. Soon after, we seek out another service to be excited about.

Joey Flores, a reformed ad network guy, and co-founder and CEO Earbits, an online music service, doesn?t buy this logic. In his essay, ?Why Music Startups and Ad Networks Suffer from Flavor of the Month Syndrome,? Flores argues that users flee from services around the same time they start interrupting their free music streams with ads.

Pandora, after all, sounds great when it plays music customized to your taste. But when it recommends that you attend the latest movie or drink the newest beer, the honeymoon grinds to a halt. Flores believes this sentiment to be true across the sector. You?re a king until your investors start looking for money, you insert ads, and your users forsake you.

After that, you?re just another schmuck trying make a business and it?s an uphill battle. Flores tells sidewinder.fm his thoughts on what it takes to win this battle and why startups must align their revenue streams with their product.

?

Why does the media have a fetishism for music startups? Does the accelerated hype-cycle often do more harm than it helps? How might it fuel the migration of users away from a service?

Joey Flores: The media has an enthusiasm for music companies because they?re fun products to test out, simple and relatable to talk about, and will appeal to the majority of readers. It?s also part of a disrupted industry, which makes it good fodder for both technology and business press. That being said, the state of technology and consumer press in the world of click-driven headlines is that long form content and ongoing coverage have given way to short attention span hype and controversy. This definitely has a big impact on the life cycle of startups in an environment that requires ongoing, minor iteration.

What I?ve seen in terms of the press is that getting coverage of an early launch can be relatively easy if you have a solid product, a big name tied to your company, or some other sexy talking point. But almost no companies have a product on launch that is fully refined, highly engaging, retains users, and experiences natural, sustainable viral growth. These things come only after months of trying out new product features, and making incremental improvements to unsexy things like customer communication.

"What you end up with is a press that has no
interest inwriting about the small wins that create
great companies, and?instead spend most of their
time?talking about the next big thing."

What you end up with is a press that has no interest in writing about the small wins that create great companies, and instead spend most of their time talking about ?the next big thing?. That means that solid companies with evolving products take a back seat in the media to new companies or industry scandals, and that makes it hard for solidly-run startups to get the ongoing coverage they need to be introduced to new users at the times that their service has become good enough to keep them.

Kyle Bylin: Advertising, you suggest, can be the death-kneel of a service, because users strongly dislike it. They attempt to avoid being exposed to ads ? sometimes by signing up for a service under a new email address ? and show little interest in paying for a premium tier where ads are removed or less prevalent.

This can be troublesome, because if a startup develops a service that becomes popular, they must determine how to generate revenue to offset costly licensing fees and provide returns to their investors. Oftentimes, new startups will pursue advertising as a business model without realizing how tangled of a web it can be.

Turnkey ad integration exists through Google and other networks, but to get Pandora-level rates requires tremendous scale, a promotions team, and constant app optimization. Worse still, some users appear to have such a gag-reflex to advertising that they just stop using a service and switch to another one at first sight.

Will advertising ever be a sustainable business model for music startups? Does the model force you to forgo features in favor of optimization? Why does advertising push users away?

Joey Flores: The only thing stopping advertising from being a sustainable model for music startups right now is royalties. If royalties were more equitable, companies like Pandora would be profitable and sustainable now. People can argue all day long that what Pandora pays is a fair rate for artists, but there is little arguing that it reflects the value of music content online.

For better or worse, users can get their music from a million different sources, many of which are free, illegal and don?t benefit content creators at all. In that environment the industry needs to be realistic about what kind of revenue is appropriate for a streaming provider to pay. Right now, what they?re paying isn?t realistic, and there is really no basis for it being a fair rate to all parties concerned. Keeping the rates at unsustainable levels forces companies to split their focus far too early between figuring out how to build a product that will keep consumers happy for the long haul, and covering the spread on high priced costs for content. Startups in other industries get to focus 100% on building a product that their users will pay for, and the majority of founders will tell you that singular focus is necessary for startup survival.

"Since consumers are mostly unwilling to pay
for?streaming music, focusing 100% on building a
product?that consumers will pay for isn?t possible.
Instead, music?startups have to split their focus
on ?building?a great?productover here, but on
building?a monetized business over there."

Since consumers are mostly unwilling to pay for streaming music, focusing 100% on building a product that consumers will pay for isn?t possible. Instead, music startups have to split their focus on building a great product over here, but on building a monetized business over there. Splitting your focus like this early on is pretty much guaranteed death for startups.

As for why advertising pushes users away, the problem with advertising on streaming music services is that it?s intrusive. Advertising on regular web properties certainly annoys some people, but it doesn?t stop you from getting out of the service what you want, which is to read an article, find a business listing quickly, and so forth. With music, because most people are not looking at their screens and the value of non-intrusive display advertising is minimal, companies are forced to play audio advertisements that significantly impact the user experience. With so many options for where to listen to music, audio advertisements are a barrier consumers aren?t willing to overcome for an experience that is only marginally better than the next one.

Kyle Bylin: In your essay, you argue that no major online music service has figured out how to align their revenue streams with their product.

Pandora, for example, has a massive audience that uses their service, but their actual customers are advertisers. So their product, while incredibly simple and compelling, is optimized to deliver ads and maximize click-through rates. The company can?t solely focus on developing features or promoting music, because users and artists don?t generate revenue.

An alternative route, as you?ve demonstrated with Earbits, is to forgo premium, ad-free tiers, because users don?t pay for them, and focus on marketing an inventory of artists over advertisers. So an artist can sign up with Earbits and buy spins on the service, which puts their music in front of listeners.

This makes you beholden to the needs of your customers (artists) and enables you to be creative in how you connect them to their potential customers (fans). If you develop a great feature that converts your users into passionate fans, you can release it immediately, rather than holding out to sell your users to brands.

What?s the hardest part of making the artist a customer? When did you fathom that chasing band dollars might be better than brand dollars? Why don?t major services take this approach?

Joey Flores: There are several challenges to making the artist a customer.

1) The first is that the lifetime value of an artist as a client is lower than it is with Pepsi, so you can?t afford to invest in heavy touch sales. Everything you do to reach out to bands has to be through smart marketing, and you?re going to need hundreds of thousands of clients to be a venture-backed business.

2) The second is that bands are already being over-marketed to by horrible services that take advantage of them constantly, and they?re cynical about it. You?ve got to break through that barrier and you have to do it with short, concise messaging. That isn?t easy to do when you?re offering something new and complex.

3) The third hurdle is that many of the best artists don?t own their own content and can?t legally license it to a service like ours. So, even if the artists are forward thinking and excited about our service, we?ve got to convince their record label that it?s a great opportunity.

Most record labels are very narrowly incentivized. Even though what we?re doing is a great overall opportunity for their bands, who are interested in awareness for their shows and other monetization, there are an unfortunate number of labels who don?t care about a band?s overall success and just want to know how a service translates into album sales.

"Our goal has always been to help high quality artists
find the right audience and turn them into devoted
fans and customers. That is a multi-billion dollar
problem. We just believe that the best way to achieve
that goal is through a streaming music experience."

Despite those hurdles, we knew from day one that Earbits could be a big business because we?re solving a real and massive problem. Unlike other companies we get compared to, we never got into this to solve the monetization problem of streaming music. Our goal has always been to help high quality artists find the right audience and turn them into devoted fans and customers. That is a multi-billion dollar problem. We just believe that the best way to achieve that goal is through a streaming music experience.

Other companies seem to look at the idea of charging artists for inclusion in their streaming service as a bad thing, and I would generally agree. If all you?re looking to do is figure out how to solve the revenue problem of your streaming service by charging bands, you?re going to fail. When you wake up everyday focused on how to get people to engage with your artists, the fundamentals of building a big business are different. They?re much more sound than trying to monetize expensive content through unrelated sources.

Kyle Bylin: Everyone is trying to create a better widget, but few have developed a better experience. The major services offer a marginally improved means to play a Rihanna song and share it with your friends. They all have the same library of millions of songs, but most of their users have no idea what do with them. The innovative services enable new ways to experience and discover music, mostly by emerging artists, but most people have no idea that these services exist.

We Are Hunted, Songza, Shuffler.fm, 8Tracks, Aweditorium, and Exfm, among others, have created fantastic web and mobile apps, but none of them seem to have crossed over into the mainstream market. Some might say that that reason for this is that casual listeners only want to play a Rihanna song and share it with their friends. The appeal of experiencing and discovering music is lost on them, because these are largely fanatic constructions that require more time and effort than they have to invest.

Will any of these innovative services reach the mainstream market? Will we see them transform how casual listeners experience and discover music? What might it take in order for this to happen?

Joey Flores: I don?t know enough about the vision for these services to tell you for certain whether they?ll become mainstream. What I do know is that services won?t make music discovery an ongoing, important part of their service unless they are financially incentivized to do so. You may have some of these services go mainstream, but whether they will still focus as much on discovery is another question. The incentive for focusing on discovery on a large scale could come through running a service like ours, or it could happen through innovative contractual agreements that trade promotion of new artists for cheaper access to legacy content, among other ways.

Kyle Bylin: I?d certainly consider Earbits as one of these innovative music services. You have continuously evolved the product to make the experience better and pursued partnerships that would align you more closely with artists. No one is quite doing what you?re doing, perhaps, because running a music startup is harder than it looks and your approach is harder copy than it seems. It?s still the early days for the online music and it seems like you are just getting started with what you want to do.

What does the future you?re trying to build look like? What is be the ultimate Earbits experience for fans and artists? What major developments and feature additions may debut in the coming months?

Joey Flores: The future for Earbits is a one-stop, listen and shop experience that lets users consume music how they want while giving them countless ways to give value back to artists through support, promotion, and commerce. Right now you have one service to listen to mainstream music, another to listen to emerging music, another for engaging with bands, one for keeping up to date on live shows, and yet another for buying music and merchandise.

"When our listeners can get nearly all of the music
they can elsewhere, plus easily buy an album, concert
ticket, t-shirt or other product from any band they
hear, not?only will it be a huge differentiator in terms
of?consumer experience, but it will also provide far
more?value to artists and the industry than the
lackluster?royalties they?re getting now."

The long-term vision for Earbits is to bring all of these things into one platform. When our listeners can get nearly all of the music they can elsewhere, plus easily buy an album, concert ticket, t-shirt or other product from any band they hear, not only will it be a huge differentiator in terms of consumer experience, but it will also provide far more value to artists and the industry than the lackluster royalties they?re getting now.

In terms of upcoming releases from us, right now, we already produce significant value for the artists on our platform. The number one thing they all want is more of what we already provide, which is targeted exposure and high quality fan acquisition. So the features we?ll be debuting in the coming months are all about listener engagement, retention and acquisition ? i.e. audience building.

You?re going to see more ways to access the music we have, an even stronger focus on personalization for listeners, and some viral marketing techniques that put Earbits on the fast track to widespread consumer adoption. When the scale of our audience is meeting the demand from our bands, we?ll be shifting to more partnership integrations and better tools to help the bands maximize the value of their airtime, including a greater focus on album sales and live show awareness.

{Giveaway} Taste of Melbourne ? A Restaurant Safari : Iron Chef ...

Posted by Iron Chef Shellie on October 29, 2012 ? 4 Comments?

I have x5 double passes for the Thursday or Friday session of the Taste of Melbourne to give away! Read through to find out how to enter!?

Every year I tell you about my favourite food event of the year, Taste of Melbourne. Previous posts have been a taste of this year?s line up, 2011, 2010, 2009, and 2008.

This year, the event is held later on in the year, and being held outside, lakeside at Albert Park Lake. All the other Taste festivals around the world are held outside, so they decided why shouldn?t Melbourne be outside too? To be honest, I?m glad they moved it, as last year was so damn squishy in the Royal Exhibition Building, I was getting so annoyed that I couldn?t actually move anywhere in a hurry!

I was invited as one of six people to be part of a restaurant safari, highlighting some of the top restaurants that will be at this year?s festival.

The Taste of Melbourne will be running Thursday 15 ? Sunday 18 November 2012. It brings together Melbourne?s hottest restaurants including:

So if you?ve wanted to try places like Mamasita, but the no booking policy, long waiting around thing doesn?t float your boat, I highly?recommend?you come down and get some tacos and corn in your belly, along with trying dishes from a whole heap of top restaurants! Where else can you indulge in numerous restaurants? dishes in the same venue on the one day?!

My wish list of restaurants to try is ever expanding, so I?ll be glad to cross a few off my list come November. And it?s not all about the restaurants, there are over 100 leading gourmet food and drink producers on site as well. You can even watch a cooking demonstration, attend a master class or relax in the Laurent-Perrier VIP Lounge or in the Lilydale Gourmet Picnic Garden.

Other features of this year?s festival will include an entire Sustainable Living Garden dedicated to greener cooking, rotating pop-up restaurants including Josie Bones, Three Blue Ducks, Bishop and Pope Joan. Malaysia Kitchen will feature Poh Ling Yeow, and a range of Melbourne?s Malaysian restaurants. Get up and close with top chefs in the Bertolli Taste Kitchen and Chef?s Skillery will feature international guest chef Nuno Mendes, as well as Matt Preston, Frank Camorra and Nick Creswick.

SO! What to expect in terms of food? You can see some of the dishes I?ve already tasted at the preview event, but on our restaurant safari we checked out: Mamasita, Sak?, Mr. Hive Kitchen & Bar as well as the gorgeous roof top bar at The Aylesbury. Scroll down for food porn :)

Mamasita

Mamasita Margarita ? El Jimador reposado, Cointreau, fresh lime, on the rocks

Elotes Callejeros ? ?Street Style? chargrilled corn, queso, chipotle mayo & lime

Taco de lengua?y cachete ? Braised ox tongue & cheek, pickled veg & ghost chilli mayo

Taco de pescado ? Grilled fish, lime, achiote paste, red onion salsa & chipotle mayo

The group reaction to the ox taco was ?ooo that?s a bit spicy? ?. then I read the menu? it had GHOST CHILLI!! I?ve only seen that kind of level of spice on Man VS Food, and I never thought I?d have the opportunity to try that here in Melbourne. It was good though, washed nicely down the the margarita. The fish taco was great too, I?m yet to encounter a fish taco I didn?t like. And well, everyone knows, the corn there is the best thing on the menu.

Sak?

Edamame

Sake Nigiri ? Kingfish jalapeno nigiri, salmon, soy salt, truffle oil and katafi pastry nigiri

Beef Tataki ? Seared tenderloin, Tataki sauce

Chirsashi Salad ? Yuzu dressed sashimi pieces, thin noodles, seasonal leaves and tempura crunch (will be available as a vegetarian dish)

Sak? is one gorgeous restaurant. One that would probably have been on my wish list for many years. Lovely private rooms, great huge windows over looking one of the best views of Melbourne?. and the food was just another level of Japanese. I usually have sushi when I get takeway at work, but kingfish and jalapenos were just something I wish the local sushi man would make! GREAT combination! And the Chirsashi salad was like nothing I?ve ever had before, but blew me right away. I need to have this again.

Mr. Hive Kitchen & Bar

The Alyesbury

Gay Pear ? Rum Soaked Pear, Fresh Berries, Cider Top

Dorper Lamb Ribs, Pea and Mint

The roof top bar is very welcoming, I?m upset I didn?t know about this place earlier as my friends and I LOVE cocktails. This place has a great play on words with their selection, including the Gay Pear. Sort of a dessert and cocktail in one, it was refreshing and full of texture. The lamb ribs were perfectly salty, a fantastic way to end an amazing night.

Can?t wait to do it all again, and more restaurants in November!!

Durham?s Megafaun to perform live score of acclaimed documentary, Without a Fight, at UNC?s Memorial Hall

UNC?s Center for Global Initiatives, Carolina for Kibera will host a one-time only screening of the acclaimed documentary Without a Fight, featuring a live musical accompaniment from the Durham-based band Megafaun and a host of special guests at UNC?s Memorial Hall Thursday November 1 at 7 pm.

Without a Fight follows the triumphs and travails of four African youth as they vie for a championship in Kibera, a Kenyan slum rife with ethnic tensions and violent upheavals. For the youth of Kibera, soccer is a way of life. But until the Champion?s League was formed ten years ago, thanks in part to the UNC-based nonprofit Carolina for Kibera, soccer was also a source of tension and violence. Youth peace activists in Kibera asked themselves a question in the face of tribal tension: what would happen if they formed a league that required kids from different tribes to be on the same team? Without a Fight answers this question and offers a unique look into the problems of poverty and division.

The world premier of Without a Fight was held at 11 mm Film Festival in Berlin in March, and the North American premiere was held at Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in April. Since then, the film has been shown at universities across the country. Without a Fight has been nominated and short listed for a special jury award by the Peace & Sports International Forum. In mid November, the film will screen as an official entry at the All Sports LA Film Festival

The screening at Memorial Hall marks a homecoming for director Jason Arthurs, who graduated from Carolina, and producer Beth Kutchma, who works at UNC?s Center for Global Initiatives and is part of the heralded Durham-based band Red Collar. While finishing Without a Fight, they asked Megafaun?s Brad and Phil Cook to write and compose the soundtrack. They did, and at Memorial Hall November 1 the Cook brothers will perform a live rendition of the score they composed.

The festivities begin at 5:30 pm with a food truck rodeo outside Memorial Hall, activities for students and families, a demonstration from rope skippers The Bouncing Bulldogs, and a special appearance by UNC soccer sensation and world-renowned freestylist Indi Cowie, whose talents have been featured on various television programs, a Manchester United football match, and in a New York Times video.

At 7pm, UNC alum and Carolina for Kibera co-founder Rye Barcott will introduce the trailer to his book, It Happened on the Way to War, which inspired Arthurs and Kutchma to make Without a Fight. Acclaimed singer-songwriter JKutchma will perform his song Arms Around the World, which he composed for Barcott?s trailer.

After the screening of Without A Fight, there will be a Q&A session with Barcott, Kutchma, Arthurs, Phil and Brad Cook, and Hillary Omala, the Executive Director of Carolina for Kibera?the organization that sponsors the soccer league featured in the film.

Tickets to the screening are $15 for the public, $10 for UNC faculty and staff, and $5 for students with ID. Children under 12 are free.

AP poll: Majority harbor prejudice against blacks

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Racial attitudes have not improved in the four years since the United States elected its first black president, an Associated Press poll finds, as a slight majority of Americans now express prejudice toward blacks whether they recognize those feelings or not.

Those views could cost President Barack Obama votes as he tries for re-election, the survey found, though the effects are mitigated by some people's more favorable views of blacks.

Racial prejudice has increased slightly since 2008 whether those feelings were measured using questions that explicitly asked respondents about racist attitudes, or through an experimental test that measured implicit views toward race without asking questions about that topic directly.

In all, 51 percent of Americans now express explicit anti-black attitudes, compared with 48 percent in a similar 2008 survey. When measured by an implicit racial attitudes test, the number of Americans with anti-black sentiments jumped to 56 percent, up from 49 percent during the last presidential election. In both tests, the share of Americans expressing pro-black attitudes fell.

"As much as we'd hope the impact of race would decline over time ... it appears the impact of anti-black sentiment on voting is about the same as it was four years ago," said Jon Krosnick, a Stanford University professor who worked with AP to develop the survey.

Most Americans expressed anti-Hispanic sentiments, too. In an AP survey done in 2011, 52 percent of non-Hispanic whites expressed anti-Hispanic attitudes. That figure rose to 57 percent in the implicit test. The survey on Hispanics had no past data for comparison.

The AP surveys were conducted with researchers from Stanford University, the University of Michigan and NORC at the University of Chicago.

Experts on race said they were not surprised by the findings.

"We have this false idea that there is uniformity in progress and that things change in one big step. That is not the way history has worked," said Jelani Cobb, professor of history and director of the Institute for African-American Studies at the University of Connecticut. "When we've seen progress, we've also seen backlash."

Obama has tread cautiously on the subject of race, but many African-Americans have talked openly about perceived antagonism toward them since Obama took office. As evidence, they point to events involving police brutality or cite bumper stickers, cartoons and protest posters that mock the president as a lion or a monkey, or lynch him in effigy.

"Part of it is growing polarization within American society," said Fredrick Harris, director of the Institute for Research in African-American Studies at Columbia University. "The last Democrat in the White House said we had to have a national discussion about race. There's been total silence around issues of race with this president. But, as you see, whether there is silence, or an elevation of the discussion of race, you still have polarization. It will take more generations, I suspect, before we eliminate these deep feelings."

Overall, the survey found that by virtue of racial prejudice, Obama could lose 5 percentage points off his share of the popular vote in his Nov. 6 contest against Republican challenger Mitt Romney. But Obama also stands to benefit from a 3 percentage point gain due to pro-black sentiment, researchers said. Overall, that means an estimated net loss of 2 percentage points due to anti-black attitudes.

The poll finds that racial prejudice is not limited to one group of partisans. Although Republicans were more likely than Democrats to express racial prejudice in the questions measuring explicit racism (79 percent among Republicans compared with 32 percent among Democrats), the implicit test found little difference between the two parties. That test showed a majority of both Democrats and Republicans held anti-black feelings (55 percent of Democrats and 64 percent of Republicans), as did about half of political independents (49 percent).

Obama faced a similar situation in 2008, the survey then found.

The AP developed the surveys to measure sensitive racial views in several ways and repeated those studies several times between 2008 and 2012.

The explicit racism measures asked respondents whether they agreed or disagreed with a series of statements about black and Hispanic people. In addition, the surveys asked how well respondents thought certain words, such as "friendly," ''hardworking," ''violent" and "lazy," described blacks, whites and Hispanics.

The same respondents were also administered a survey designed to measure implicit racism, in which a photo of a black, Hispanic or white male flashed on the screen before a neutral image of a Chinese character. The respondents were then asked to rate their feelings toward the Chinese character. Previous research has shown that people transfer their feelings about the photo onto the character, allowing researchers to measure racist feelings even if a respondent does not acknowledge them.

Results from those questions were analyzed with poll takers' ages, partisan beliefs, views on Obama and Romney and other factors, which allowed researchers to predict the likelihood that people would vote for either Obama or Romney. Those models were then used to estimate the net impact of each factor on the candidates' support.

All the surveys were conducted online. Other research has shown that poll takers are more likely to share unpopular attitudes when they are filling out a survey using a computer rather than speaking with an interviewer. Respondents were randomly selected from a nationally representative panel maintained by GfK Custom Research.

Overall results from each survey have a margin of sampling error of approximately plus or minus 4 percentage points. The most recent poll, measuring anti-black views, was conducted Aug. 30 to Sept. 11.

Andra Gillespie, an Emory University political scientist who studies race-neutrality among black politicians, contrasted the situation to that faced by the first black mayors elected in major U.S. cities, the closest parallel to Obama's first-black situation. Those mayors, she said, typically won about 20 percent of the white vote in their first races, but when seeking reelection they enjoyed greater white support presumably because "the whites who stayed in the cities ... became more comfortable with a black executive."

"President Obama's election clearly didn't change those who appear to be sort of hard-wired folks with racial resentment," she said.

Negative racial attitudes can manifest in policy, noted Alan Jenkins, an assistant solicitor general during the Clinton administration and now executive director of the Opportunity Agenda think tank.

"That has very real circumstances in the way people are treated by police, the way kids are treated by teachers, the way home seekers are treated by landlords and real estate agents," Jenkins said.

Hakeem Jeffries, a New York state assemblyman and candidate for a congressional seat being vacated by a fellow black Democrat, called it troubling that more progress on racial attitudes had not been made. Jeffries has fought a New York City police program of "stop and frisk" that has affected mostly blacks and Latinos but which supporters contend is not racially focused.

"I do remain cautiously optimistic that the future of America bends toward the side of increased racial tolerance," Jeffries said. "We've come a long way, but clearly these results demonstrate there's a long way to go."

Attorney general says Citizens insurance increases legal | NOLA.com

HOUMA -- Significant rate increases for state-sponsored wind and hail property insurance policies that Citizens Property Insurance Corp. approved earlier this year were legal, according to an opinion by the state's attorney general.

The Courier reports that the Attorney General James "Buddy" Caldwell issued the opinion last week.

The rate increases brought the cost of insurance up more than 100 percent in some coastal parishes. State Treasurer John Kennedy had attacked the rate increases, saying he believed they were illegal.

At issue was the state law that established Citizens, which says the insurance company must charge either 10 percent more than the actuarial rate, which is set to cover home expenses and possible losses, or the market rate charged by private insurance companies.

As a normal businessman/woman who is all too busy throughout, it
may not be a thing of interest to run & promote your business all
by your own. Even if these types of people do wanna do something
like this, they're most likely to end up emulating some or all
content from some or all links. This, will mean trouble as your site
will be ranked very low & far behind in the search list pages (Say
at 35 or 40). This will certainly provide you with least or no
publicity.

This is the exact reason as to why you should hand over this task
to the professionals of SEO'S. The effects due to mass exposure
in leading search engines like Google, Yahoo are indeed very
positive. Keeping this in mind, the firm establishes the client's
link. Besides, they how to handle the penguin & panda issues
better. Your website will be filled with so much of valuable content
that it shall be ranked high in quality & so in the first page or
second and not behind this. Your website will also obtain a
preferred low bounce rate as many more people will trust you as
being a genuine company to satisfy their needs. This means that
your business will pick up very soon & that you can earn profits
for your investments.
The outbound & inbound traffic for your link will improve as
compared to before. Just like in the case of news channels & social
networking sites, your popularity will also go up. The firm
comprises of two factions : The SEO analyst faction & The content
writer faction. In SEO analyst mode, the clients are targeted
through the social networking, multi casting, blogging & e mail
services in mass. Out of these, those who are most likely to take
the service are shortlisted upon seeing their interest.
The outbound & inbound levels are varied to give & take data to
and from the client(s). Your faults as a client in promoting your

link can also be highlighted by these analysts. Without this group,
it would be practically impossible to analyze the faults in your link.
Thus, we see that their role is to use various strategies for your
link to reach the top ranking. One of their strategies mp marketing
solution happens to be a method that is actually provided by another
group. This is the second group that is known article writing
group. Their job is to prepare articles based on the type of
business that the client is running. Say for a person who's running
a spa, an article about spa health care would have to be presented
& the like for other requirements. Without their fancied words, the
client may feel uninterested to carry on with the SEO firm. The
articles prepared by them happen to be those paragraphs of data
that we see when we enter in to a web site. Thus, these words
must be so good that first the client should like & then when
he/she posts, the actual public should also like the post. In many
ways, it is very hard to say as to which part of the SEO is more
easy or tough. Both are equal.
