How reliable are drought predictions? Study finds flaw in popular tool.

Researchers say the Palmer Drought Severity Index, devised for monitoring short-term trends, has been misused for longer term analyses and is thrown off by higher temperatures from global warming.

The inappropriate use of a metric for measuring drought has led some studies to overstate a trend over the past several decades toward more frequent, intense droughts, according to a new analysis. The trend has been attributed in no small part to global warming.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The authors of the paper caution that the metric's continued use is likely to overstate future effects as well, making it more difficult for water resource managers and others to get reasonable projections of future drought hazards as the climate warms.

The study does not make those projections. Nor does it focus on assessing recent or current droughts, such as this year's drought in the US ? the most extensive and severe in at least 25 years, according to the US Department of Agriculture. Instead, the study is a cautionary tale about using the right tool for the right job.

More broadly, and consistent with a wide range of other research, "our work on 21st-century drought [shows] that there are regions of the world that are going to experience more drought" as global average temperatures continue to rise during this century, says Eric Wood, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Princeton University in Princeton, N.J., and a co-author of the study, which appears in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature.

But the key questions for resource managers and their political overseers in assessing future drought risk, he continues, center on the extent, intensity, and frequency of drought. Some drought projections, which use the approach the new study challenges, yield results where "you'd think it will never rain again," Dr. Wood says.

At issue is a measure for gauging drought, known as the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI). Its most publicly recognizable form is found in drought maps based on the index ? with their yellow, tan, red, and brown splotches signifying the severity of the drought in different parts of the country. These maps have appeared on countless newspaper and web pages over the past two years of widespread drought in the United States.

The problem, according to the research team, led by Princeton's Justin Sheffield, lies in the index's original design. It was developed to track drought conditions from one week to the next, or one season to the next, with a particular focus on croplands in the center of the United States. It was not designed to track trends globally over decades or centuries. Yet some researchers continue to used it for that purpose, Dr. Wood says. The reasons range from the index's relative simplicity to a lack of confidence in the quality of more-recently available data that allow for more-sophisticated calculations.

It's an issue not lost on many in the wider community of researchers focusing on drought and global warming.

"We've known for quite a long time that the PDSI calculation is prone to problems dealing with climate change," says Richard Seager, a researcher who focuses on drought and climate change at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, located in Palisades, N.Y. "Rising temperatures drive it haywire."

US Military Telescope to Track Space Junk Down Under

A U.S. telescope will hunt for space junk in the skies above Australia under a new defense agreement. The Space Surveillance Telescope is capable of scanning an area of space the size of the United States in seconds as it searches for small space debris that may threaten military satellites in orbit.

"We value the partnership with Australia that allows us to widen our space situational awareness and share some of our revolutionary technology advances in space surveillance," said Travis Blake, program manager for the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which built the telescope. "This technology development effort could benefit both nations as we catalogue and detect entire sets of currently uncharted objects that are in geosynchronous orbit above Australia."

DARPA's agreement with Australia's Department of Defense will allow the 180,000-pound telescope ? weighing as much as 41 mid-size SUVs ? to be transported Down Under to discover and catalog previously unseen space debris. It is the latest in a series of U.S.-Australian agreements to keep watch on dangers in space.

The telescope has tracked small objects in geosynchronous orbits about 22,000 miles high since being completed in 2011. Its sensitive gaze could detect a small laser pointer shining on top of New York City's Empire State Building from as far away as Miami.

Data from the Space Surveillance Telescope will feed into the U.S. Air Force's Space Surveillance Network ? a network consisting of 29 space surveillance radar, telescopes and sensors designed to track possible near-term collisions with satellites or spacecraft. NASA will also get a chance to examine the telescope's data for signs of small asteroids.

But the Air Force network can track only 30,000 of the 500,000 space objects orbiting the Earth. The huge challenge has compelled DARPA to enlist a worldwide network of amateur astronomers in its new SpaceView program as part of the hunt for space junk.

How to Pass the RTRP Exam by Avoiding Common Mistakes Takers ...

Learn from others experience and don?t fail in the same common exam mistakes

The annual passing average of some competency exams administered by Prometric has traditionally been rather low. The annual passing average of the Uniform Certified Public Accountant (CPA) tests, ?for example, is in average around 45%. This means that more than fifty percent of first-time takers of the CPA exams fail every year and have to retake the exams at some point.

Booklet cover 150x150 Avoid the Common Mistakes that Makes Fail Comptency Exam Takers For RTRP Exam Candidates The RTRP exam is new, and therefore it will take some time to develop and publish pass/fail statistics of first-time RTRP exam takers.

Considering the number of exams administered and keeping in mind the differences in complexity and structure between the CPA and the RTRP exams, one can ask, just for the purpose of learning from their mistakes, why do so many CPA candidates fail their exams?

Following are the most common mistakes CPA exams candidates make. RTRP candidates can learn from and avoid the same mistakes, many of them resulting from lack of attention to details.

Mistake # 1: Not understand what the exam question is asking for

Failing to understand what the question is asking for is one of the most common mistakes competency exam candidates make. A typical example would be the response to a question such as ?which is NOT a requirement to claim EIC? and of the options to choose from, three are requirement and one is not. But the exam taker fails to lock on the word ?NOT? and ends up picking one of the requirements for the answer, which, of course, is the wrong answer.

Therefore, as an exam taker, take time to read every exam question carefully to understand what is being asked. Do not jump into a quick-start, only to be disappointed later when you find out that you didn?t understand what information the exam was asking for. Read the questions carefully and pay attention to details. Take reasonable time to recall what you know, without going overboard. Respond to the question asked and move forward. Don?t get stuck thinking on it. Answer the question and let it go. Move on, refocus, and give your full attention to the next question.

Mistake 2: Lack of an exam strategy

Rule 5 of the seven rules presented in the e-book in ?The 7 Rules that Will Help You to Pass the RTRP Exam? explain the importance of having a strategy for the RTRP exam.

An exam strategy is a reflected approach to working efficiently throughout the exam. It combines your previous experiences as a student and as an exam taker with all the information you have gathered and learned about the RTRP competency exam. A personal exam strategy is something you will develop during your preparation stage and apply on exam day.

Strategies are combination of several factors:

1)?? the speed you will apply to each question,

2)?? if you will use the review option by marking question

3)?? if you plan to review few or many questions ? which depends what you decide in 1)

4)?? if you decide to use or not the reference materials

5)?? which specific information you will research into the reference materials

6)?? how and when to use your scratch paper

7)?? how to control your timing

8)?? use of calculator ? manual or screen

9)?? Others

Having an exam strategy gives you the sense of confidence and relief from worries, and you acquire from knowing what to do at any moment and what to do next, in a mentally demanding situation and under the pressure of time such as the RTRP exam. It is extremely decisive and determinant on your end result. Your minute by minute performance and productivity is so much higher when you have decided on an exam strategy than when you have no strategy at all.

Mistake # 3: Computational errors

The RTRP exam does not require complicated mathematical calculations as is the case with other competency examinations. You will be tested on your basic knowledge and competency in preparing individual federal income tax returns. That is more about mastering rather than just being familiar with most tax subjects involved in preparing tax returns based on Form 1040.

For the most part, cases and problems included in the questions that require determining a specific amount can be done mentally. They do not require the use of a formula or complex calculation other than the basic operations of adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing.

Questions involving basic calculation to figure out the correct answer frequently are? mistaken by exam candidates. The bad part is that sometimes such mistakes do not result from lack of understanding the question or lack of knowing how to calculate the answer but simply from carelessness resulting in picking the wrong numbers from the text, keying the wrong number in the calculator, not verifying calculations made mentally, and other errors in the same frame of references.

You can minimize computation errors by using available tools effectively. Write down in your scratch paper the numbers involved, and before using the calculator recheck those numbers against the text. Key numbers carefully in the calculator keypad and verify your entries by comparing them with the numbers in the text. If you think time permits, do your calculations at least twice to confirm your results. And remember that the numbers that are offered as option in your answers usually are taken from common possible mistakes. So, even if your calculation results in a number that is one of the options for an answer, double-check to make sure you did not make an error in calculation. What?s the bottom line? You can choose any place to show-off your math skills but the Prometric test room is not one of them.

Mistake # 4: Lack of familiarity with computer based testing

Computer-based testing can be a challenge for candidates who got used to take exams on paper, when they were students. No being able to highlight certain points and keywords, delete others, or perform mathematical computations on paper. Some people are used to this method and shifting to use of the computer for such activities can be a challenge to them.

Practicing for the RTRP exam using a computerized environment that simulates the real exam is crucial for your success, especially if you are a first time exam-taker in the Prometric environment. Training yourself during your preparation stage to use a program similar to one you will find in the real exam is the best way to overcome any unfamiliarity with computer based testing.

There are several online test banks that you can use to this effect. The test bank I highly recommend, the one I used for all the exams I took at Prometric, is the Wiley Test Bank.

Mistake # 5: Lack of familiarity with researching

The multiple choice and true / false questions you will have to answer during the RTRP competency exam have different levels of difficulty. Their level of difficulty has to do with the topic, the structure of the question, the wording of the question but also your level of knowledge (your weaknesses and strengths on each topic).

As presented in our e-book ? ? , you can apply techniques to solve multiple choice and true / false questions to minimize the impact of your weak topics in your exam score.

Also, you can use the reference materials that you will have access during the test to search for information needed to answer a question. There are three resources available:

  • Publication 17 (Tax Guide for Individuals);
  • The Form 1040; and
  • Form 1040 Instructions.

Because of the time constraint, you should practice researching inside the available resources, online, while you are preparing for the exam.

Read More from Us!

The worst thing you can do is research the reference materials for first time during the exam. Or, worse still, use the reference material for an answer to each question you are unsure about during the exam, or you allow yourself to be trapped into doing random that keeps you reading random information that comes on your computer screen.

You don?t have time to read the reference material during your exam. You should limit the use of the reference materials to obtaining or verifying specific information that you can locate quickly in the document. Practice navigating the text of the reference materials (Publication 17, Form 1040 Instruction) by linking directly to the topic you need via the table of content, extract the information you want and return immediately to the exam. All you need is a few seconds to research data for each question.

Researching the reference materials as a way to find correct answers to multiple choices or true / false questions can be time consuming. It is not the most recommendable approach to find the answer of a question and should be used just when it is strictly necessary after applying other exam techniques such as an educated guess. Read more about those exam techniques here.

As I suggest in the ?Exam Strategies? e-book, the reference materials should be strategically reserved for specific, pre-determined cases based on covering some of your weak areas or for specific information that you decide not to memorize.

You have to practice researching the reference material online (not the paper version) and becoming familiar with where the information you need or are planning to use is located so you can consult it in real time during the real exam.

We stress the point that you should use the online version of the reference material rather than the print version because the two versions are structured differently. The research skills you need to develop should be geared for the online version, which is the one you will have access during the exam.

The RTRP exam is a computer-based-test that requires computer skills. Practice by using the table of content of the online version of Publication 17 and Form 1040 Instructions to locate the information you are searching for.

If you are planning to consult specific information about a topic included in the reference materials, you should become familiar with the location of the information you need in the on-line version of the research material prior to the your exam day.

Pioneer Ridge Middle School students raise $600 to fight cancer

GARDNER, Kan. - One local fifth-grade class has raised more than $600 to help fight leukemia and lymphoma.

The students at Pioneer Ridge Middle School in Gardner, Kan., are raising the money for the Pennies for Patients campaign, of which 41 Action News is a proud partner.

The money will go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Tracy Draeger said the 27 students he teaches in his fifth-grade class have come together to raise the money.

"Every one of the kids brought in something and sometimes they'd bring in so much money, I'd be like, ?Are you sure this is okay with your parents,?" he said.

Pioneer Ridge has raised $2,200 school-wide.

In Parliament: Speech by MP Png Eng Huat on the Casino Control (Amendment) Bill

Published by The Online Citizen on November 16, 2012

PRESS RELEASE

In Parliament on 15 November 2012, speech by MP Png Eng Huat on the Casion Control (Amendment) Bill.

  1. Sir, the review of the Casino Control Act is timely after almost 3 years of experience in regulating and managing the 2 casinos.

?

Visit Limit and Casino Entry Levy

  1. The Casino Control (Amendment) Bill has introduced a new measure called Visit Limit to minimize the social impact of casino gambling.
  1. Currently, there are 2 social safeguards that deal directly with casino entry ? an exclusion system and the imposition of an entry levy.? The exclusion system is clear cut and easily understood.? The entry levy safeguard, unfortunately, creates a dichotomy between the intention of the day levy and that of the annual levy.
  1. While the $100 a day levy will make people think twice about making frequent visits to the casinos, the $2,000 annual levy will encourage gamblers at risk to visit the casinos at will.
  1. If you enjoy gambling, the choice is a no-brainer between paying $100 or $5.50 a day to have a go at lady luck.? And every gambler knows that to recoup the annual levy paid, he would have to visit the casino at least 20 times a year.? So what is the resulting effect of the annual levy?? It encourages frequent visits to the casinos and not the other way around.
  1. The annual levy makes daily visit to the casinos cheaper than to visit the latest Garden by the Bay attractions.? The average levy per day is even cheaper than a meal at the fancy food courts outside the casinos.?
  1. The truth is the annual levy is undoing everything the day levy is trying to do; and that is to be an effective social safeguard against problem gambling.? It is not too difficult to see that the new visit limit measure is probably targeted mainly at gamblers who bought the annual levy.
  1. But Sir, if we know someone is going to get addicted to drugs, do we limit the person?s intake of drugs to address the issue?? What social safeguard will the visit limit achieve in the long run?? If a person is deemed at risk in gambling addiction, would limiting the patron?s visit to the casino help or make any social sense?
  1. When you mix the convenience of a casino next door with a cheap entry levy in a densely populated place, the resulting concoction is not only potent but extremely harmful; potent to the gaming business but harmful to the society.
  1. It was reported in the New York Times that the Resorts World Casino New York, which opened last fall, made more money from electronic slot machines than those in any of the 12 casinos in nearby Atlantic City or in Connecticut.
  1. The article said, ?The success of the casino, the only one in the five boroughs of New York, suggests that no matter how luxurious the accommodations or exciting the entertainment, nothing appeals more to gamblers than a casino that is nearby.?
  1. The director of the University of Nevada?s Institute for the Study of Gambling and Commercial Gaming said, ?Convenience and location are the driving factors today.? If you put a casino in a high density population like Queens, you?ll do well.? 1
  1. Sir, we can?t relocate the extremely profitable casinos but we can definitely relook at the ineffective entry levy safeguard.?
  1. I am not the first to call for the removal of the annual levy and I am sure I will not be the last.? Is the annual levy an untouchable pre-condition cast in stone in the agreement with the operators that this government can do nothing with it except to come up with measures like visit limit to counter the negative impact of the misguided entry control?
  1. Removing the annual levy would be a better option than to introduce a visit limit to safeguard gamblers at risk.? The fact that this government collected over half a billion dollars in entry levies since the casinos became operational more than 2 years ago can only mean one thing; we need to relook at our safeguards.? The day levy is a safeguard.? The annual levy is a loophole.? I urge the government to seriously consider doing away with the annual levy.?

?

Advertising

  1. Next, it may be time for us to tighten the issue of soft advertising by the casinos under the guise of sponsorship and donation.? I once came across a residents? corner decked with large red lanterns with ?Resort World Sentosa? printed on it.?
  1. We all know what Resorts World and Sands are renowned for and it is definitely not about Ferris wheel or Art Museum.? These companies are famous for one thing and one thing only ? operating casinos.
  1. Do we want to allow these casinos to soft sell their brand name, trade mark or service mark as these are identical to that of the integrated resorts which the casinos are a part of?
  1. The Casino Regulatory Authority must state clearly what the casinos can do under the guise of sponsorship and donation; more so when their names are synonymous with casino gambling.?? It is for this same reason we do not see Philip Morris or Marlboro lanterns in our estates.
  1. We are dealing with seasoned casino moguls here. ?I am sure these people will not hesitate to try their luck at anything to have market share and they have a deep pocket to do so.
  1. While I do believe we should allow some leeway for the casinos to promote the non-gaming parts of their business, we must be mindful that beneath the fa?ade of the family-oriented integrated resorts lies a vice that has brought untold misery to many families around the world.? In this instant, the CRA must be clear on what the casinos can do in the area of soft advertising.

?

Jobs and Benefits Data

  1. Sir, while the review of the Casino Control Act is timely, this government must also review the economic benefits promised by the casino operators.
  1. When this House debated on the casino proposal in 2005, both Prime Minister and the Minister for Trade and Industry had said that the two casinos will create 35,000 jobs of which more than 10,000 are direct employment jobs.
  1. Almost 3 years have passed since the casinos opened their doors to roaring business.? How many Singaporeans have they hired?? What kind of jobs have they given to Singaporeans?? To date, those numbers remain a mystery.
  1. A year ago, we were told in this House that employment figures for casinos, breakdown by foreigners, PRs and Singaporeans, are protected under the Statistics Act and Singaporeans only need to know that 70 per cent of the direct hire by the casinos are locals; a term which refers to Singapore citizens and PRs. 2? A year later, we found out from the press that 70 per cent of the direct hire by the casinos are actually all Singaporeans.? The reports even breakdown the numbers by casino. 4
  1. My question is ? could the Acting Manpower Minister verify these numbers which are supposedly protected under the Statistics Act as mentioned by his predecessor in October 2011?? If yes, I find it unacceptable that such information cannot be revealed in Parliament under the guise of the Statistics Act while the press is free to report on these numbers.
  1. And why are we protecting these numbers in the first place?? If we allowed the casinos to make money here, surely it is of public interest to know if they are making money at the expense of jobs for Singaporeans.
  1. We are not alone in worrying about jobs for our own people when a casino comes to town.? A recent report in the New York Daily News said the Resorts World Casino New York City fell short of the promise it made in mid-2011 to hire 70% to 80% of its staff from the borough of Queens.? The Daily News investigation has also found that residents do not get a proportionate share of high-ranking management jobs at the casino. 3
  1. Is this government keeping a close watch over the promises made by the casinos to create jobs for Singaporeans?? I urge this government to release the casino employment data in a term that all Singaporeans can understand and appreciate.? Telling the people that the casinos hire 22,000 employees does not square well with the government?s initiative to make the distinction between Singaporeans and non-Singaporeans sharper.
  1. And what other benefits have the casinos brought on?? Can the government publish more data to substantiate the benefits?? How many local SMEs and suppliers are doing roaring business with the casinos?? What is their percentage share of the supply chain in dollars and cents?? Can the government be more transparent in providing regular updates on gaming revenues and social impact caused by the casinos?

?

Conclusion

  1. The Prime Minister said in 2005 that ?to make an informed decision, we needed to understand what exactly an IR would entail. What sort of investment would it be? What benefits would it bring?? We needed information to decide.?
  1. Mr Speaker, seven years have passed and the casinos are fully operational.? Singaporeans too needed information now to decide if the casinos have made an impact in their lives and in the society.
  1. The reality today is that this government has asked Singaporeans to gamble big on the success and benefits of having casinos on our shores.? What are the odds of Singaporeans winning the lion share of the jobs and contracts available at the casinos or is it going to be the same old story again ? the house always wins?
  1. Thank you.

Tablet Grudge Match: iPad mini vs Nexus 7 vs Galaxy Tab 2 (310)

After all the speculation, rumours and discussions on why Steve Jobs never supported the idea of a 7-inch iPad, the iPad mini has finally made it to the markets. Although a tad bigger with a 7.9-inch display, it still comes in the 7-inch class of tablets. Apple?s new entrant has broadened and strengthened the 7-inch tablet market and comes across as a good contender to the Google Nexus 7, which is the most popular Android tablet and Samsung?s Tab 2 (310). Let?s take a closer look at each one of them to see which one is worth your money. In the infographic below, we have compared all the key specifications of the iPad mini, Nexus 7 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (310), and arrived at a final verdict.

Evolving roles of hospice and palliative care

ScienceDaily (Nov. 14, 2012) ? Many people think hospice and palliative care come at the end of life, and while both often play a key role then, palliative care also can provide pain relief, symptom control, emotional comfort and spiritual support as patients recover from serious illnesses. National Hospice Palliative Care Month is held in November to educate physicians and patients and their families about hospice care, palliative care and their similarities and differences. Donna Kamann, a palliative care nurse practitioner at Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse, explains these growing and evolving medical specialties and how they can help patients and their loved ones.

At Mayo, for example, palliative care teams include physicians, advanced-practice nurses, chaplains, licensed clinical social workers, pharmacists and physical and occupational therapists. Starting with their individual expertise, the members build a care plan that carefully considers each patient's unique needs. Palliative care can segue into hospice care if the illness becomes terminal.

"Respecting the desires of patients -- as well as their families and their caregivers -- palliative care seeks to improve quality of life in the face of serious illness," Kamann says. "Palliative care treats people suffering from serious and chronic illnesses such as cancer, cardiac disease such as congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, kidney failure, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and many more."

Palliative care and hospice care can provide:

*Pain management: Most patients and families want every effort be made to relieve pain. It is important for the patient to receive the appropriate medication for his or her condition. Different types of pain require different medications.

*Symptom control: This includes management of the symptoms associated with the illness and side effects of treatment: pain, nausea/vomiting, poor appetite, shortness of breath, loss of energy, sleep disturbances, anxiety and depression related to the illness, and delirium, Kamann says.

*Emotional support: It is natural to feel sad, angry, panicked, or helpless when you or someone you love becomes ill. Team members help patients and families develop coping skills and ease anxiety over how illnesses may progress. They also can assist with difficult conversations that patients and families may want to have, but do not know how to start. The simple presence of someone who loves the patient can be extremely soothing and helpful.

*Spiritual care: Spirituality and spiritual life are about religion and anything else through which a person finds meaning, says Michael Brown, a chaplain in spiritual care at Mayo Clinic Health System. "Spirituality is a practice that cultivates the deepest aspects of who we are," Brown says. He suggests providing an atmosphere that is in harmony with the patient's wishes. Music therapy, massage therapy, reiki and healing touch are among options available to patients in palliative care.

Palliative care is available at any time during a serious or life-threatening illness, while hospice care is available only during the final months of life -- when curative or life-prolonging treatments have been stopped. Hospice care can be provided at home or on an in-patient basis. Roughly 1.6 million people with life-limiting illness receive care from U.S. hospice or palliative care providers, according to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization.

Record sale of contemporary art as Christie's tops $400 million

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The art auctions ended with a big bang on Wednesday as Christie's staged the most successful sale of post-war and contemporary art in history, taking in $412 million as new records were set for Jeff Koons and Jean-Michel Basquiat and an Andy Warhol soared to $43.8 million.

It was a second night of blockbuster contemporary art results after rival Sotheby's staged the most successful auction in its history, giving a much-needed shot of adrenaline to an art market that had been jittery since both houses held tepid sales of Impressionist and modern art last week.

Seven lots each sold for more than $20 million, several private collections saw every work on offer finding a buyer, and only six of the 73 works that hit the block went unsold.

Christie's officials were thrilled after the auction, which totaled $412,253,100 including commission, just beating its high estimate, with 11 artist's records set.

"This truly was an extraordinary sale," said Jussi Pylkkanen, president of Christie's Europe, Middle East and Russia who also served as auctioneer.

"Clearly there's an enormous amount of energy in the post-war and contemporary market," he said, adding "It's highly likely that we'll see a continuation of records being broken."

While even the most successful auction feature just a handful of remarkable prices, one after another works by Roy Lichtenstein, Mark Rothko and Franz Kline - whose auction record of $9.3 million was smashed to $40.4 million - soared far beyond even the high estimates.

Warhol's "Statue of Liberty," a 3D silkscreen featuring multiple images of the iconic monument, fetched just over $43.7 million, easily beating the pre-sale estimate of $35 million.

Kline's untitled abstract expressionist oil from 1957 soared far beyond the $20 million to $30 million estimate, as did Koons' vivid, large-scale sculpture "Tulips," which graced Christie's Rockefeller Center entry plaza and carried the same estimate.

It sold for $33.7 million, easily beating Koons' record of $25.8 million, and made the second-highest price ever achieved at auction by a living artist.

Basquiat's untitled work from 1981 sold for $26.4 million, easily beating the old record of $20.1 million set in June.

Also noteworthy, officials said, was how strongly the sale's various components, ranging from pop art to abstract expressionist to contemporary, performed.

Seminal works of pop art exceeded expectations, including Lichtenstein's "Nude with Red Shirt," estimated at about $15 million but selling for nearly twice that at $28.1 million, and Warhol's Marlon Brando silkscreen which fetched $23.7 million and beat the high estimate.

Rothko's abstract "Red Stripe (Orange, Gold and Black) did just as well, selling for $23.4 million against a $20 million high estimate.

"It's very difficult to cover that broad a spectrum," Koji Inoue, Christie's vice president and specialist in charge of the sale told Reuters, referring to works in the sale that dated from 1948 to just last year.

"It's amazing that contemporary art has become blue-chip value," he said, adding "I think we're just seeing the beginning."

About the only casualty was a Gerhard Richter being sold by hedge fund giant and noteworthy collector Steven Cohen, which was estimated at $9 million to $12 million but went unsold when bidding peaked at $8.8 million - a sign that Cohen was unwilling to lower his reserve, the secret minimum price at which the consignor agrees to sell, even slightly.

Headaches from Repetitive Intake of Painkillers

Most individuals with migraines and headaches use medicines as a typical solution. And if the pain reoccurs, they take in over and over. It may be fine sooner or later, however, taking more painkillers for headaches can lead to unfavorable results. Unneccessary use of pain relievers can perpetuate headaches, allowing them to recur as soon as the medication wears off. When the ache persists, the normal reaction is to take in more painkillers, which may not be a good idea after all. Medicines aren?t the only option to eliminate headaches. There are other cures that are safer to use than harmful drugs. Chiropractic Duluth GA and SPG nerve block are some of the worry-free treatments options that will end your headache for good. SPG block is a good choice if you prefer to ease your pain instantly. If you want pain relief that has holistic health, chiropractic is the way to go.

UAF Students get down to business at accounting competition semi ...

Erin McGroarty/ Sun Star Reporter
November 13, 2012

?You?ve joined a team running an election campaign for the next President of the United States of America. Your organization has seen its clients struggling with the financial issues faced by many Americans and you believe that your years of experience in management accounting gives you the big picture perspective needed to provide practical solutions to these issues.?

This was?the challenge presented to?hundreds of accounting?students at the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants 2012 Accounting Competition. This fall, the University of Alaska Fairbanks School of Management?sent two teams of UAF students to this national accounting competition.

This competition is for college students around the country and put on annually by the AICPA. Each year, hundreds of college students compete to present, in a group, their best idea for how to solve some of our country?s most prominent economical issues.

The competition is separated into three rounds: the beginning round, the semi-finals and the final round. Two UAF teams?competed in the first round to place in the top 20 teams. One of the UAF teams ?Nanook Accountants,? proceeded to the semi-final round. During the next round, which is being voted on at the moment, ?Nanook Accountants? will be competing for a place in the top 3 teams. The final team wins a prize of $10,000 and trips to Washington D.C. Public voting for finalists will be open until November 14.

?This competition is a great resume builder, not to mention the experience of competing in a national competition,? said Ruth Prato, an Accounting Instructor in the UAF School of Management,??Here they?re competing against their buddies in the classroom, but now it?s students from all over the country.?

Each year, the competition features?a different scenario?to the groups, who are then expected?to come up with a?solution. They then present this solution to a group of professional judges in Washington, D.C. through a 1,000 word essay during the first round. This year?s challenge presented each group of students with a campaign and a their own imaginary presidential candidate. According to the AICPA website, the individual groups then developed their ?candidate?s proposed solutions to address current issues as part of the candidate selection process? as well as to ?outline proposals for 2 of the 3 main issues: social security, income taxes, and the deficit?.

During the second round, each group is expected to create a video presentation expanding on one of the previous three ideas they chose at the beginning of the competition. The Nanook Accountants chose to expand on their thoughts regarding the national deficit.?Some of these solutions included enforcing compliance auditing?for government entitled programs, as well as increasing the amount of eduction American?youth receives regarding national issues. By increasing their eduction and understanding of these issues, Nanook Accountants hope these students will then develop skills needed to deal with the financial future that they have inherited.

?We?re really proud of them,? said Amy Cooper, ?Term?Instructor of Accounting. ?The competition has been a huge undertaking and they?re exceeded my expectations every step of the way.?

5 Ways to Bust the Post-Election Blues | World of Psychology

5 Ways to Bust the Post-Election BluesIt?s nearly a week after America?s presidential election and much of the country is still abuzz with post-election analysis and political commentary. While many of us have experienced political overload, avoidance is not as easy as turning off the television or changing the radio station. Election aftermath continues to infiltrate social circles and take over conversations with family and friends.

Social networking interactions are far from the exception.

Whether your candidate won or lost, the close call of this race indicates at least some of your friends and family don?t share your reaction. This difference in opinion has spurred hateful Facebook memes, negative comments to loved ones, and outright social disputes.

Why are people still so angry about the election and what can you do to move forward?

The Psychology of Post-Election Frustration

As pointed out by Michele Zip of The Stir, it?s easy to be downright surprised by the hateful and angry responses of some people following the election. While Mitt Romney supporters are obviously frustrated with their candidate?s loss, others have also grown weary of the bickering and negativity. Social psychology offers several explanations for why typically calm and friendly people have lost their cool during the course of this election.

Effort justification, a phenomenon described by social psychologist Aaron Aronson (2002), is one explanation for both parties? bad behavior following the election. When individuals invest a significant amount of energy into a cause, they often feel compelled to justify their choice. Energy can come in many forms, ranging from actual campaign participation to paying close attention during the final weeks of the campaign.

Those who supported Romney likely subscribed to his platform?s political values and beliefs. When he lost, Romney supporters experienced a dissonance as their goals seemed lost and their efforts to no avail. In justifying their efforts, Romney supporters might post angry status updates or grumble to friends and family members.

Effort justification also explains the behavior of some Obama supporters, who also feel compelled to justify their effort in this campaign. Mocking posts and negative behavior have been far from reserved for losers in this election. Individuals on both sides have fueled ongoing hostility.

The fact that so many people continue to engage in angry political discourse suggests another social psychology explanation at play, conformity. Online communication indicates a growing trend in loud and frequent announcements of politically driven thoughts. Twitter handled 31 million tweets on election night alone. Many of those were far from friendly or even tactful. Some messages, whether written or spoken, are even aggressive.

A long-standing theory, the frustration-aggression hypothesis, suggests that people react aggressively in response to frustration for what they believe to be an unfair outcome (Dollard et al., 1939). The aggression is intended to equalize that unfairness. After several days of tolerating backlash, Obama supporters share the burden of feeling unfairly scrutinized and a need to get even.

5 Ways to Bust Post-election Blues

Post-election negativity can have significant consequences for one?s mood. It?s also proven detrimental to many relationships. Whether you?ve wiped a few contacts from your Friends list or you aren?t speaking to a coworker, here are 5 ways to calm the dialogue and bust the post-election blues.

  1. Deflect and redirect. Most of us have had plenty of recent opportunities to chat about the election. The fires of negativity can be dampened by taking a break from the hostility. If you hear the topic come up, offer a neutral deflection and change the subject. Try something like, ?This campaign has definitely been a busy one and now the holidays are upon us! What are your plans for this weekend??
  2. Distance yourself from negativity. If you?re burned out on campaign talk, feel free to step out of the breakroom, unsubscribe from updates, and turn off the TV. Put some space between yourself and the hostility.
  3. Ignore, ignore, ignore. This basic but essential suggestion remains important in busting the negativity blues. When someone makes a comment that increases your frustration, verbally or online, ignore it. The origin of the comment, of course, can make this troublesome. It?s one thing if it comes from an acquaintance. If it comes from your spouse, your options to ignore might be limited.
  4. Encourage responsibility. While it?s best to ignore most rants, sometimes it feels impossible. Counter a person?s complaints about injustices with an honest inquiry about how they personally plan to address the problem. If delivered with tact, you?ll be surprised how it stops most in their complaining tracks.
  5. Self-awareness. Be aware of your own forays into the stream of political negativity. Giving and getting hostile interactions often go hand in hand. Recognize your tendency to respond impulsively or post and say hateful things. Increasing your own positive energy is the most direct step to busting the post-election blues.

Guiltless Getaways: A Sneak Peek, My Staycation at the Oakwood ...

Here's my inside story haha. I brought a bag full of spices, bread crumbs, eggs and lasagna sheets from home to my apartment during my staycation, intent to make something for "dinner". I checked in at 3 p.m., left my overnight bag and walked to the new SM Megamall Building A supermarket to buy cheese, tomato sauce and some fresh parsley. I actually forgot about the dishwashing liquid and Alain, the resident attendant, had some in stock. Guests can actually avail of the grocery services offered by Oakwood in the morning (a great add-on for forget-fuls like me or business travelers and long stay-ers who don't have much time or gusto for grocery shopping) and have them delivered in the afternoon. It's my nth attempt to make Manicotti from this cookbook.
It's easy to make and required some light mixing and an oven, which is available in the kitchen of my suite. The only downside from this recipe is that I had to make sure that I don't veer away from the recipe too much, including the measurements (measuring cups were mine), or else it will almost always fails haha so I have to make a lot.?I brought out all the mixing bowls and kitchen utensils from this fully-equiped gourmet kitchen feeling totally in charge and all messy haha. I love the kitchen setup because I can watch from the TV in the living room! Hehe.
After around, um, 2 hours, here is the final finished product! All the Pyrex stuff and bowls are included in the apartment already =)

I spent the night eating, using the entertainment system and taking full advantage of the in-shower?steam bath. I actually fell asleep on the foot of the big bed while watching a travel show on my other flat screen TV hahaha. Ah, this is the life!

When I woke up, it was already time for the complimentary breakfast at Oakroom included in the room package. I loved the noodle soup, the bacon and the international selection. Before I went down, I called Housekeeping if it was possible to do the turndown service, um in the morning haha, and when I returned.. TADA! Even the kitchen was squeaky clean =) Ako na ang spoiled hehe! Ready to sleep again!
I was planning to use the lap pool but then I remembered that I had a private bath tub! hahaha. I stayed in until check out to enjoy the room a bit more =) Thank you for your hospitality, Oakwood Joy~Nostalg! I shall see you again when I need some alone time.

Condom conundrum: Porn industry ponders latex law

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The show must go on, is the entertainer's credo, and it did just that in the nation's Porn Capital even after Los Angeles County voted to require performers to use condoms when filming sex scenes.

One of the industry's biggest stars, James Deen, reported for work, condom-free as usual, just hours after voters adopted the new law.

During a break in the action Thursday, however, Deen raised the same questions on the mind of everyone in LA's billion-dollar-plus porn industry: Can a planned court challenge get the new law tossed out before it is even implemented? Or, perhaps this time next year, will he be making films like "Atomic Vixens" and "Asian Fever Sex Objects" in some place like Las Vegas or Florida?

The law, listed on the ballot as Measure B, was passed by 56 percent of voters Tuesday. It won't take effect until election results are certified, which likely will be several more days. It could take months longer before county health officials decide how to enforce it and whether they must begin dispatching prophylactic police officers to keep a close eye on actors.

The Department of Public Health issued a terse statement with no timetable for developing an enforcement plan. There was no hint of whether there would be surprise inspections or if public employees would be paid to watch porn flicks to see if actors were complying.

The nation's adult entertainment industry, which is believed to generate as much as $7 billion a year in revenue, according to the trade publication Adult Video News, vigorously opposed the new law. It argued it is unneeded because of safeguards that include monthly venereal disease checks for all working actors.

They also maintained it would be costly and difficult to enforce and could drive the business out of Los Angeles' sprawling San Fernando Valley, taking with it as many as 10,000 jobs, including actors, directors, film editors and crafts and makeup people.

The main problem, they say, is that fans don't want to see actors using condoms.

"The last time we attempted to go all condom, our industry lost sales by over 30 percent," said Deen. "That's a huge hit to our economy."

Deen, who has appeared in more than 1,000 hardcore films over the past nine years and estimates he's been in about 4,000 sex scenes, said he's never been infected with any disease and he gets tested every two weeks.

"I love condoms, I think they're great and the safest thing you can do in engaging in sexual intercourse with a stranger," he said, adding he uses them in his personal life but not onscreen.

Industry officials, meanwhile, say the last reported case of HIV linked directly to work was in 2004. Since then, they add, about 300,000 films have been made.

Michael Weinstein, the nonprofit AIDS Healthcare Foundation's founder and president, disputes those figures, saying there have been other, more recent HIV infections, not to mention numerous cases of gonorrhea, chlamydia and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Weinstein, whose group led a petition campaign to place the measure on the ballot, says he plans to take his campaign statewide.

In the meantime, he says implementing and enforcing the new law should be easy.

"This is no different than supervising restaurants or nail salons or barbershops," Weinstein said. "You fill out forms, you are granted a permit and, periodically, somebody goes out and does spot inspections."

Easy to implement or not, porn producers say the cost of paying for permits will likely be steep and the drop-off in sales could bankrupt them.

"Certainly this is the biggest threat that I've seen to the industry in a very, very long time," said Steven Hirsch, chief executive of Vivid Entertainment Group, one of the largest purveyors of porn films, including celebrity sex tapes and popular X-rated parodies of "Batman" and "Superman" films. "There have been obscenity prosecutions, but this is something on a whole different level."

Hirsch, who co-founded Vivid 28 years ago, said he is confident the industry will get the law overturned on the grounds it violates filmmakers' First Amendment rights of free expression.

If it isn't overturned, he said his company will simply move production out of Los Angeles County to survive.

Several people who attended an emergency meeting of the industry's advocacy group, the Free Speech Coalition, last week, said porn producers have already been in touch with officials in Las Vegas and parts of Florida. In some instances, they said, tax incentives have been offered to lure them.

Through a quirk in county law, the industry might even be able to pack up and move just a few miles down the freeway to Pasadena or Long Beach.

Those municipalities, although located in Los Angeles County, have their own health departments, and Pasadena said earlier this week it won't enforce the new law.

That would be just fine for many actors and directors, who say they don't really want to leave their home base.

"People forget that porn people are people too," said Kylie Ireland, a veteran actress and director who has appeared in such films as "Being Porn Again" and "Calipornication."

"They forget that we have families and we are married and we have kids and we have lives and jobs and hobbies just like everybody else."

Breaking Up With Coach K

Coach Michael Krzyzewski gives instruction to his players.

Duke Blue Devils head coach Mike Krzyzewski argues with an official during the game against the Ohio State Buckeyes at Value City Arena on Nov. 29, 2011 in Columbus, Ohio. Ohio State beat Duke 85-63.

During last year?s NCAA basketball tournament, fans around the country were treated to something almost as sweet as seeing their own teams win the national championship: watching Duke lose. In its opening game. To Lehigh. My schadenfreude was slightly different from everyone else?s, but it was schadenfreude, and this was new. I?d never been one of those Duke haters. In fact, I?d been a Duke fan for more than two decades, since my first years as a graduate student in Durham, when, despite my many aversions to life in the Gothic Wonderland (e.g., people calling it the Gothic Wonderland), I began to treat the school?s basketball triumphs as my own. But I can?t root for the Blue Devils anymore. When they play John Calipari?s Kentucky Wildcats on Tuesday, I?ll be rooting for Kentucky, sort of, but I?ll really be rooting against the NCAA. Kentucky is the ugly truth the NCAA wants to hide, and Duke is the hysterical lie they hide it with.

As a Ph.D. student, I did the usual TA stints in giant lecture classes. I graded athletes? essays, and I knew the unfortunate work I was reading signaled admissions standards bent for the sake of ACC and NCAA championships. My broader suspicions, though, were neutralized by the heroic profile of Coach K. I?d both played and coached high-school basketball, and, for me, the living myth of Mike Krzyzewski was irresistible. A bonus, at a relatively small school like Duke, was the regular chance to run in pickup games with Coach K?s players, who were usually gracious and even generous with the ball, though you could often feel a certain condescension when they passed it to you.

It wasn?t just ex-jocks like me, apprenticing with former students of Allan Bloom in the stodgy political science department. Coach K?s aura filled the most radical graduate lounges. Young Lacanians and Derrideans, honing their hermeneutic chops under Fredric Jameson and Stanley Fish, could be found cheering alongside preppy, heteronormative undergrads at local bars. Coach K made this possible. College basketball was notoriously corrupt, and college sports in general were a problem on several levels, and sharing Final Four ecstasies with those undergrads could make you feel a little funny, if you thought too much about it. But, on Coach K?s authority, we let ourselves join in on the self-celebration. He was a different sort of college coach. The exception. The ideal.

But in so desperately seizing onto Coach K as this ideal, we were conceding the indictment against his profession. Our admiration was actually an untenable form of relief. Finally, we thought, here?s someone whose comportment and reputation do not obviously mock us for losing ourselves in his sport, for treating it as a purer form of competition: ?The College Game.? He?s an exception. There has to be someone, the ideal coach who embodies the true spirit of amateur sports, who allows us to go on imbibing their incredible drama. The theoretical possibility of this ideal coach redeems our exultation and dejection on those autumn Saturdays, and during ?Championship Week? and ?March Madness.? It eases the yearly nausea of ?Bowl Season.?

But what is this ideal coach an exception to? Famous scofflaws, presumably, like Jim Tressel and Barry Switzer, and whoever was most recently fired at the University of Miami, and the other less notorious but still kind of sketchy heads of major ?programs? in college football and basketball. The ideal is an exception to the familiar run of characters who make up the coaching ranks of big-time college sports, people whose jobs depend on a wide array of legal scams and sanctioned loopholes: the slippery promises of recruiting, degraded standards in admissions and academics, eligibility schemes that shunt players into gut classes but leave them far from any degree when their scholarships run out. And, for many coaches, there are the seven-figure contracts and rich sponsorship deals they take for themselves as they bask in the legal and sentimental light of amateurism, and also in the cultural authority of the universities whose standards they corrupt.

Of course, the ideal coach can?t really be an exception, not if he wants to?as they say?compete.?That?s his job description, too. Somehow, people considered Joe Paterno, living by his own laws inside the private reality of his luxurious football complex, an exception. But he merely lacked certain outward traits we?ve come to expect in the men who lead our major ?programs??that familiar combination of big-boss imperiousness and con-man dodginess. We needed Joe Pa to be someone who doesn?t exist, and he did sort of look like that person, and that was good enough for us.

So maybe we should idealize the typical coaching persona instead, hold it up as the awful truth it represents, challenge ourselves to face this truth, and license ourselves to enjoy ?The College Game? only when we?ve proven brave enough to dwell in its hideousness. It might be unpleasant at first, but it would save us a lot of cognitive dissonance in the long run.

Perhaps, then, our new coaching ideal should be Calipari, a man hired to lead one of college basketball?s greatest programs despite an almost comically sordid coaching history. It turns out that vacated championships and forfeited seasons are not too shameful a legacy for the University of Kentucky, storied home of Adolph Rupp. (But then, why would they be?) We?d find it edifying to treat Calipari as our model, to fetishize his example. He is, after all, exemplary. Even during those years when he?s observing the rules as written, his daily job involves ethical shortcuts and competitive stratagems that are more or less exactly as sketchy as the vibe he gives off during chats with Tony and Mike on Pardon the Interruption: the nervous good humor of someone who?s just been released on a technicality. Imbibe that spirit, if you can.
