What makes Mark Hanley such an interesting author is that he has done the reverse. Today he joins the AuthorHouse Author?s Digest to talk about how he has turned a selection of his screenplays into Screemplays, making him a published author.

The Evolution from Screenplay to Novel

First, I just wanted to say thanks to AuthorHouse for giving me the opportunity to talk about my new book, Screemplays and how it came to be.

I suppose I should start out by saying that my novel was never actually meant to be a novel at all. But the story of how it came to be is pretty interesting none-the-less. Hopefully.

Stirring Writing Passions
I?m a film student graduate who earned my B.F.A. from the Academy of Art University after five long years of online studying and course taking. My original intent was to become a film director by taking courses in film and television directing from here in Illinois in order to allow me to stay home and help out where I was needed most.

I originally planned to take my final semesters of production classes in person in San Francisco as would be required. But as the semesters neared, I knew I would not be able to go. So I switched my major over to screenwriting. I figured that since I love writing and a great story is the heart of any great film, it would be a practical and creative way for me to tell a cinematic story, graduate and still stay at home.

So, I took more and more screenwriting classes. So many in fact that I soon found that I liked writing more than being on a set. It?s just me and the idea. No soundstage getting in the way.?

Attracting Hollywood?s Attention
Finally, school ended, but I realized my next goal was perhaps the hardest yet ? get Hollywood?s attention. A feat much, much easier said than done, especially where I live.

Frustration and desperation soon followed. I didn?t know what to do next.

Then one day I thought to myself, if I can?t get my work into Hollywood the traditional way of query letters and such, why not get it out there another route?

A book, I thought.

Turning a Screenplay into a Book
I can?t remember anyone else having published a novel of formatted screenplays, so I figured I?d take the plunge ? making absolutely certain to preserve the format. In screenwriting it?s all about formatting. And since AuthorHouse allows us to format the way we want to, it was a perfect fit.?

I then compiled four screenplays I?d written in school from the genre I know best ? horror ? and compiled a 400 page novel from them.?

Once the book was proofed and on its way to being printed, I set about designing a book cover and trailer for my work. This is where a lot of my schooling came in very handy. I used the software and training I received in my non-film classes to do all the graphic and media aspects of my book. I think that all arts are intertwined in some way, and by doing all the writing and artwork myself it allowed me as an artist to come full circle.

The Similarities Between Self-Publishing and Film Making
In many ways self-publishing is a lot like independent film making. Both are ways that people can freely express themselves without the intervention of a large entity such as a studio or editor telling us that something doesn?t work.?

So there?s a quick wrap-up on, Screemplays and how it entered the world. Hopefully, in the near future I?ll set about compiling another series of my scripts for a follow-up book. Perhaps one in an entirely different genre? But for now I?m just glad to get my work out there. It?s certainly better than letting a pile of unsold scripts sit in the bottom of my desk and collect dust. At least this way someone can read them. And who knows, maybe Hollywood can still come calling?

Barclays chief set to scale back investment banking

The new boss of Barclays wants to shrink its investment bank division as he seeks to move on from rate-rigging and mis-selling scandals, he indicated in an interview published on Sunday.

Chief executive Antony Jenkins told The Sunday Times newspaper that there was "no doubt" that tough banking sector regulations would "make some activities in investment banking difficult to make an adequate return on".

He added that profits would be hit by British plans to force banks to ringfence their retail activities.

At the same time, Europe's major banks will also be forced to hold more cash as a buffer against any other financial crises, under looming Basel III rules.

"There are a number of external factors coming down the line and regulation is clearly a very powerful one," Jenkins told The Sunday Times.

In a separate interview, the new Barclays chief added that he wanted to do more "listening than talking" as he seeks to turn the group's fortunes around.

"I'm going to spend a lot of time with external shareholders. I'll be listening a lot more than I'm talking. That's an important way of operating," he told the Sunday Telegraph.

"I want to hear what's on investors' minds. If they've got concerns about how we run the bank, then I would anticipate we'll change the way we do business."

Jenkins, formerly Barclays' retail and business banking boss, was appointed chief executive last Thursday with immediate effect. He replaced US national Bob Diamond who resigned in July over the notorious Libor rate-rigging scandal.

As well as the Libor case, which has cost the bank ?290 million in fines, Barclays has been involved in the payment protection insurance scandal and the mis-selling of interest rate swaps to businesses.

In another heavy blow, Barclays revealed last week that the Serious Fraud Office was probing payments made to Qatar Holding, which it tapped for funds at the height of the 2008 global financial crisis to avoid part-nationalisation.

playPlay Game Review - Fun Games For The Entire Family

A moms review:
We received all three playPlay games to review (which was a pleasant surprise) and LOVED them all. There are so many reasons we love these games and here they are.

-They can each be played a number of ways so they NEVER get boring.
-They are great for all ages.
-You win the games together as a family!!!!
-They are very easy to adapt by making them harder or easier if need be for younger children, children with special needs or older children.
-The games are educational and get the entire family working together, which you don't see very often with board games.
-They incorporate both left and right brain thinking where as most games only use left brain thinking skills.
-They are fairly quick to play and don't drag out and take FOREVER like some games (you know what games I am talking about).
-They keep my 5 and 6 yr olds attention.
-The children beg to play these games so we have played a game about 3 times a week since we got them.
-Playing a playPlay game is a great way to start or end our homeschool days.

The three games playPlay games are?ColorPlay, StoryPlay and PaintPlay. Below is a brief description as well as our thoughts on each game.
PaintPlay:

Ages 6+,?2-4 players,?The Original Art Making Game!?
Skills:??Color recognition?? Matching?? Creativity & Imagination?? Dexterity ? Cooperation
Work together to create a piece of artwork while trying to collect the 6 Paint Tokens?but beware! There are 6 ?Meanies? that want?to steal your?creative juices.?Includes everything you need?to paint & play!?

This is the family favorite and we played this one the most. Everything you need to play the game is included. Note:?you will need to eventually have more paint and paper on hand. We ran out of both after playing the game 3 times. Also since you will have a glass of water beside the game for the watercolors you may want to consider laminating the cards to make sure they don't get wet. Yup that happened to us because a clumsy boy knocked the cup over. The cards are made from a thick cardstock and did?dry?out but I wish I would have thought about laminating them before they got wet because they are kind of curved now and don't lay completely flat.?

The paper is the game board, the paint and watercolors are your game pieces and the cards provide the instructions.?The directions for the "meanies" was a little confusing for the kids to understand so we made adjustments to the rules for that part of the game. The game is very simple to play and I would say children as young as 3 could even?participate?in this game with some modified rules. It was lots of fun to see our creation at the end of the game and know that we created a piece of?refrigerator?artwork together as a family. I really liked all of the educational aspects to the game. It teaches young children shapes and colors. And for everyone (even the adults) it gets you using your imagination. My favorite cards instructed players to paint things that were demonstrating feelings or human actions. Such as "Make a shape that looks like it's breathing." Or "Think of a smell. Pick a color you think that smell would be and add it to the painting." Another thing I liked was how the game taught children six very important?character?traits: Inspired, Dedicated, Brave, Inventive, Confident and Creative. This gave me a great?opportunity?to discuss these traits in more detail with the kids and why these are good traits to have. This one should?definitely?be added to the Christmas or Birthday gift list.

StoryPlay:

Ages 7+,?2-4 players,?A Creative Storytelling Game!
Skills:?Language?? Creativity & imagination?? Cooperation
The StoryPlay GAME offers kids a fun & creative?way to create a story collage together. Includes?a Write & Wipe game board and pen!

This game we only played a couple of times since we received it because it is?definitely?geared more towards children who are able to read and write?sentences. But since there are three recommended ways to play it can be adapted for younger kids. This game has lots of little double sided tiles with words/pictures, a double sided wipe off board and a wipe off marker. We first tried the "notebook game". Since neither of my kids is really reading or constructing sentences yet I had to help them quite a bit but we still had fun and made a funny story. Next we tried the "name and draw it" game option. This was?definitely?more successful and lots more fun with children. We also tried the 3rd game option which is "totem pole." And this was the family favorite!!! This game provided the family with lots of laughs and giggles.

ColorPlay:

The ColorPlay GAME gives kids 3 ways to?play. Pattern It!??Work together to find?matching patterns & create a color-wheel.?Shape It! Find & match distinct shapes.?Build It! Use the shape pieces to build?and balance.

This one was my sons favorite. He is very tactile and?analytical?so this one really appealed to him. The game included a color wheel mat, double sided color/pattern shapes, shape it cards and a spinner. Again this game can be adapted for children as young as 3. The cards, shapes and spinner are made from cardboard so they are very durable. There are three recommended game playing options and we have done all three. My favorite game was "build it" where the family builds an abstract structure using as many of the color shapes as they can.

Some other uses for this game could be:
-teaching fractions
-teaching the color wheel (even though it is a simplified color wheel it still works for teaching color mixing and most of ROY G BIV).
-teaching shapes, matching and colors (great for toddlers and PreK)

My favorite game is the PaintPlay. I like the game because I get to paint and pick out cards. I like creating a picture with my family. Sometimes the pictures are silly. I like it when I get the card that lets me get to control how mommy paints with her eyes shut.

Accused rapist gets 100 lashes in northern Mali

BAMAKO, Mali (AP) ? Witnesses say that a man accused of rape in the northern Malian city of Timbuktu received 100 lashes, as the Islamists controlling the city continue to mete out punishments under Shariah law.
