Floods force evacuations in southwest Japan

Updated at 7:36 pm on 14 July 2012

Almost a quarter of a million people have been ordered to leave their homes in southwest Japan due to heavy rain.

The disaster has inundated up to four prefectures on the island of Kyushu and heavy rain is still continuing. Rainfall of up to 11 centimetres an hour was recorded early on Saturday.

Police and soldiers are continuing their search for missing people.

Japan's Meteorological Agency has warned of more landslides and floods on the main southern island of Kyushu, the ABC reports.

Local media reports say about 240,000 people were ordered to evacuate in the north of Kyushu where more rivers have burst their banks.

Television footage showed torrents of muddy, debris-strewn water and flooded houses following what officials described as "unprecedented" downpours from a weather front on Thursday.

Along the Yamakuni River in Oita prefecture, water was seen reaching the roof of a riverside drive-in restaurant.

More than 75 centimetres of rain fell in 72 hours in the inland city of Aso, the meteorological agency said.

The latest death toll was 20 and seven missing, with 19 of the fatalities from landslides and house collapses in and near Aso.
