MEN'S GOLF: Ball State set to host Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational

At the age of five the biggest decision most kids make is whether or not to have their mom cut the crust off their peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

But Joe Gasser was deciding whether to layup or to go for the green at the Delaware Country Club.

Sixteen years later, now a senior, Gasser strolls up and down the same course nearly everyday honing his game.

The Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational gives Gasser a chance to compete on the collegiate level at not only the team?s home course, but also his personal home course.

?I know every bit of this course, every little hill, everything,? Gasser said.

The chance for Gasser to play on his home course comes at a time with his game firing on all cylinders.

?I?m just confident with my game right now,? Gasser said. ?I have control on my swing, and I?m rolling putts in when I need to.?

This elevation in his game allows him to push Ball State?s No. 1 golfer junior Tyler Merkel, who was just named Mid-American Men?s Golfer of the Week, and allow no room for complacency on the team.

The push that Gasser gives Merkel has developed a bit of a friendly intra-team competition between the two.

That competition could move from who shoots better in practice, to who gets to ?kiss the cup? this week.

?
Gasser said that he felt that it was his responsibility as a senior to try and be a catalyst for the team.

Gasser is not the only player that has experience on the course, the rest of the competitors representing Ball State in the individual contest play their practice rounds on the par-70, 6,438-yard course.

Coach Fleck said he hopes that his team?s knowledge of the course will allow all of his players to have a chance win this individual event.

?Everybody is pretty familiar with the course,? Fleck said. ?They?re comfortable with the greens and hole locations, and know where the trouble is.?

Ball State has ample places to find confidence for the event, coupling home-course advantage with the momentum of winning its last event with its best round in three years.

But golf, as Gasser acknowledges, is unpredictable.

?Golf is a silly game,? Gasser said. ?One day you?ll shoot four or five-under, the next you?ll shoot four or five-over.?

Ball State?s sole home event of the fall season honors Earl Yestingsmeier. Yestingsmeier spent 31 seasons as the Cardinals? head coach, and still rarely misses an event as a fan.

This is the first year the invite will be held as an individual event, and will see 47 golfers from nine teams.

Ball State will put nine golfers into the field. Along with Merkel and Gasser, the Cardinals enter Tony Lazzara, Alex Stinson, Brodie Williams, James Blackwell, Tyler Ostrom, Zach Yinger, and Albert Jennings.

Fleck said that the field looks wide-open and that all 47 players have a chance to win.

The first 36 holes will be played Monday, beginning at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start, and the final 18 holes will start the same way on Tuesday.
