Milton 34, Wellesley 28: Raiders' football falls just short against Wildcats

After earning back-to-back victories to close out the month of September, the Wellesley High football team hoped its early season momentum would continue, especially against a winless Milton team on Friday night at Milton High.

But the Raiders missed some critical tackles and turned the ball over twice paving the way for the Wildcats? offense to tally three second half scores en route to a 34-28 victory.

?They started coming off the ball, their running back was playing at a different level, we missed a few tackles and they took it to us in the second half,? said Wellesley head coach Jesse Davis.

Milton produced 200 yards of total offense during the final two quarters, which helped the Wildcats rally from seven-point deficit at intermission and claim their first victory of the season and first win in the Bay State Conference Herget Division.

?Milton started playing at a higher level than we did in the second half and they deserved to win today,? Davis said.

?I just think Milton came out [of halftime] with momentum and I don?t think we came out firing, but give them credit,? said Wellesley senior captain and quarterback Chris Sarni.? ?They adjusted and they stopped us, [especially] in the third quarter.?

Wellesley?s offense generated the game?s first two scores as Sarni hooked up with Ned Holmes for an 8-yard strike midway through the opening quarter before T.J. Noonan rushed for a 3-yard score early in the second.

Milton rallied to tie the game with a 70-yard halfback toss from Jonathan Pierre to Chavinskee Milcent and a 12-yard strike from Wildcats? quarterback Liam Collins to Kareem Patterson before the Raiders finished the half with a 1-yard score by running back Jack Dolan, which provided Wellesley with a 21-14 halftime lead.

Milton?s defense jumpstarted its offense when the second half began with a fourth-and-6 stop, which led to a 17-yard touchdown pass from Collins to Collin O?Brien seven plays later.

The Wildcats increased their lead with two more touchdowns ? a 35-yard rushing touchdown by Pierre and a 53-yard pass from Collins to Tyler Greene.

Wellesley?s offense attempted to erase the deficit when the Raiders capped a 12-play, 73-yard drive with a three-yard toss from Sarni to Matt Dziama late in the fourth quarter.

The Raiders defense then forced the Wildcats to a three-and-out on the ensuring possession, but Sarni and his offense failed to convert on the most critical fourth down of the evening when his pass, which was intended to Tucker Morgan, wound up in the hands of Milton?s Conor Regan for the second time to clinch the victory.

?[The call on fourth down] was a hitch seam and I saw that the safety had shifted over to the right and that no one was jamming my receiver, but the linebacker dropped to deep, I didn?t see him and threw into coverage,? Sarni said of his team?s final play. ?[This loss] was definitely disappointing [because] we won two in a row and thought this would be three, but yeah it was definitely a heartbreaker.?

Wellesley (2-3) will return to the gridiron next weekend and face a tall task when it travels to Walpole. The Rebels are 5-0 and in first place in the Herget Division.
