Horsemeat scandal "inevitable" according to Cornwall Food and Drink

The horsemeat scandal that has shocked the nation was "inevitable" according to a leading food and drink organisation in Cornwall.

Cornwall Food and Drink said "convoluted supply chains" and the incessant pressure to push food prices down had caused the horsemeat debacle.

Both the Aldi supermarket chain and food suppliers Findus have withdrawn meat products from French supplier, Comigel found to contain horsemeat.

Ruth Huxley from Cornwall Food and Drink said: "We're outraged, but sadly not surprised, that this has occurred. It was almost inevitable that the convoluted supply chains that have become the norm, and constant pressure on making food as cheap as possible, would one day lead to something like this.

Mrs Huxley said she hoped the scandal would lead people to look closely at their shopping and eating habits.

She said: "Whether it's beef or horse, how many of us ever stopped to think, for example, that a frozen ready meal sold in the UK might be made in France from ingredients apparently sourced from Romania?"

Cornwall Food and Drink said people could make sure they know what they're eating by using their local suppliers.

Mrs Huxley said: "Buying direct from the many superb farm shops, farmers' markets and butchers here in Cornwall comes with an assurance that you know where your meat has come from ? and if it's not immediately clear you can at least ask a real person."

Cornwall Food and Drink has ?recently launched the Choose Cornish campaign which emphasises all the benefits of using local suppliers, whether you're a caterer, food manufacturer, or just buying your weekly groceries.

Mrs Huxley said: "If any good can come of this scandalous affair, let's hope some local businesses benefit from a well-deserved boost in trade."
