Top experts at HMC Prostate Cancer Symposium urge men to ...

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men. In Qatar, about 63 new patients with prostate cancer are treated every year at HMC's Urology Section.

Prostate cancer may not show symptoms in its early stages. Besides age, family history and race are also considered risk factors in prostate cancer.

"The symposium is part of our efforts to raise awareness on the importance of screening in the early detection of prostate cancer, as well as to update the knowledge of physicians and surgeons on the management of prostate cancer," said Dr Khalid Al Rumaihi, Head of Urology at HMC.

Dr Al Rumaihi said the incidence of prostate cancer in Qatar is not as high as in Europe and the United States. However, prostate cancer currently constitutes the most number among cases of cancer of the urogenital tract seen at HMC.

"Ten years ago we saw more cases of bladder and renal cancer among cancer cases involving the urogenital tract. Nowadays we are seeing more cases of prostate cancer. This is partly because of our efforts to raise awareness and improve diagnostic methods, which have resulted in an increase in the number of patients diagnosed at an early stage when the cancer can still be effectively treated and cured," Dr Al Rumaihi explained.

Dr Juan Palou Redorta, Director of the European School of Urology said there is now evidence showing that early detection can decrease the number of deaths from prostate cancer.

"There are several treatments established and available for the treatment of prostate cancer. Radical prostatectomy or surgery is the main treatment offered by urologists, which involves removing the prostate gland to remove the cancer. Some urologists may also offer brachytherapy, a form of radiotherapy where a radiation source is placed inside or next to the cancer," said Dr Redorta.

Men over 50 in Qatar are advised to go to their physician or go to Primary Health Care Center for regular health checks.
